It seems the fat lady is warming up. While it is not technically “cancelled,” CMT has announced its Nashville TV show will end with the upcoming sixth season. The country music cable network originally picked up the drama, when ABC cancelled it after four seasons. Although the exact release date has not yet been set, CMT has announced the sixth and final season of Nashville will premiere in January of 2018.
A CMT original series, Nashville stars Hayden Panettiere, Charles Esten, Clare Bowen, Sam Palladio, Chris Carmack, Jonathan Jackson, Lennon Stella, and Maisy Stella. Connie Britton exited the starring role of Rayna James, during season five. The drama centers on the lives and careers of country music superstars, including Juliette Barnes (Panettiere), as well as the up-and-coming performers and songwriters trying to get ahead in the business.
Nashville: A Look at the Ratings
The fifth season of Nashville averaged a 0.19 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 815,000 viewers. Compared to season four on ABC, Nashville was down by 80% in the demo and down by 81% in viewers. Still, it was the highest rated scripted TV series on CMT.
Nashville to End with Season Six as CMT Moves to Unscripted TV Series
Today, CMT also cancelled its Still the King TV series. The cable channel is abandoning its fledgling scripted programming slate, in favor of unscripted originals, as parent company Viacom tweaks the focus of several of its networks. Deadline reports:
…Nashville became an outlier at CMT, which shifted its programming strategy in the Viacom restructuring earlier this year, focusing on unscripted fare, which is significantly cheaper than scripted. Nashville, produced by Lionsgate TV, Opry Entertainment and ABC Studios, is the only scripted series on CMT. One of its biggest champions, CMT head of development Jayson Dinsmore who orchestrated the pickup after the cancellation by ABC, recently left the network. CMT is already prepping an unscripted Nashville successor with the upcoming docu-series Music City.
“All of us on Nashville are so incredibly grateful to the show’s fans, who convinced CMT to give us a chance to keep telling the story of these remarkable characters,” said executive producer Marshall Herskovitz. “And we want to return the favor with a final season that celebrates all the joys and passions, twists and turns — and amazing music! — that made Nashville such an exciting journey for the last six years.”

“After more than 120 episodes of unforgettable television, we believe that creatively it is time for the series to come to its triumphant close at the end of the upcoming season,” said Kevin Beggs, Chairman of the Lionsgate Television Group. “We’re very proud of our incredibly talented cast and crew, the creative brilliance of our showrunners, and the loyal support of our great partners at CMT, Hulu and ABC Studios. Most importantly, we owe a special debt of thanks to the Nashville fans who propelled the series to an incredible run. We owe it to them to make the 6th season the most exciting and memorable of all.”
What do you think? Is the sixth season the right time to end the Nashville TV series’ run? Should CMT have cancelled or renewed Nashville for a seventh season? Sound off, below.
I can’t believe this series is gone. I would love to see it renew. My whole week was ready for my Nashville on Hulu. What will I watch now???
I will really miss the series, it was something to always look forward to. Even though I was sad to see it end, I loved the ending. Wishing the best of everything for all of the beyond amazing and gifted actors and musicians. I’m hoping I will see each and every one of you sometime in the future continuing to gift us with your talents. Thank you.
Please keep this show. The writers, and actors are so talented. I still see a future for this show. I want to see more!!!!!
I will miss the show. It was truly entertaining. I loved all the characters and have been a fan since its beginning.
Renew !!!!
Nashville has been a breath of fresh air when so many of the networks are adding shows that do nothing but show violence . I have been a fan since the show aired and I feel it is a shame that CMT cancelled Nashville. I stream all the time it is the only way I watch TV now. I am a fan that is distressed that networks feel we do not want a show like this. I am 71 years old and sorry that this feel good show will be no more.
I have watched Nashville from the beginning It is one of my favorite shows. I can’t believe it is being canceled. There is so much trash on television now. All the cheap to make reality shows aren’t worth watching. I am very disappointed !
I am really bummed out that Nashville has been cancelled!!! I am a huge fan, cannot believe this is happening!! When ABC cancelled and I found out CMT was bringing it back I was so happy!! You should bring the show back, PLEASE!!!! The actors and the singing is wonderful!! Look forward every week to watch!!! Don’t cancel this show!!!!
I love Nashville! I am totally hooked on all the characters and am not ready to say goodbye. Hell look how long ER lasted and Grey’s Anatomy! Nashville is every bit as good and sometimes better than these two shows!! Do more shows please!!!
awesome show!! it should be renewed!!
Oh come on…LOVE this show. So much garbage on TV so of course going to be cancelled because it is good!
I am going to miss this show more than any show I have ever watched and I am a huge tv watcher. These people are like family. Shame on whoever had a hand in canceling Nashville
Really disappointed to see it go. Since I am not a fan of CMT’s current programming I will no longer be needing it in my lineup. First the ending of LAST MAN STANDING & now NASHVILLE – replacing DECENT television with unscripted trash tv.
Fingers crossed that it’s picked up by another network!
So long CMT. Hope the reality trash shows work for you
I love this show. I don’t want it to cancel. The actors are all great and the story line is getting better again. Please bring it back to regular station and probably more people would tune in.
Please don’t cancel Nashville! It is one of very few good television shows left. I actually added CMT to my cable package just to watch it. Then in turn I found other shows on CMT that I liked. If Nashville leaves I and many others will leave CMT.
I hate to see this end…its still a better choice on TV if it ends I will cancel CMT from my provider!
