The fight won’t continue. Showtime has cancelled its Penny Dreadful: City of Angels TV show so, there won’t be a second season.
A supernatural drama series that’s a “spiritual descendent” of the original Penny Dreadful series from 2014, Penny Dreadful: City of Angels stars Nathan Lane, Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, Kerry Bishé, Rory Kinnear, Adriana Barraza, Michael Gladis, Jessica Garza, and Johnathan Nieves. It’s set in 1938 Los Angeles, a time and place deeply infused with social and political tension. The series follows earnest Detective Tiago Vega (Zovatto), the LAPD’s first Latino detective, and his seasoned partner, Lewis Michener (Lane). When a grisly murder shocks the city, they become embroiled in an epic story that reflects the rich history of Los Angeles — from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.
Airing on Sunday nights, the first season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels averaged a 0.03 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 348,000 viewers. Despite the low ratings, compared to other Showtime scripted series, the show was a middle-of-the-road performer.
“Showtime has decided not to move forward with another season of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels. We would like to thank executive producers John Logan, Michael Aguilar, and the entire cast and crew for their outstanding work on this project,” the premium channel said in a statement.
The 10th and final episode aired on June 28th.
What do you think? Did you enjoy this TV series? Would you have watched season two of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels on Showtime?
Are you kidding? Well another bone-headed decision! This shows was excellent. The characters were vibrant, well acted and always made you want to learn more! It is much better than the vaguely similar story-line on Perry Mason (HBO). As always, very short-sighted.
I’m not surprised at all. The fans of the original series were expecting the same but they didn’t get any of that, wanted horror, didn’t get that. I don’t think the writers actually knew anything about the name, Penny Dreadful, why call it that when it has no relevance to the 1p paper of which it’s based. Why didn’t they just call it City of Angels? Complete missed opportunity.
That’s really unfortunate. It wasn’t anything like the first Penny Dreadful, but it had a life of it’s own, and I wanted to see this battle of good and evil play out. There was much in this show, that took me to internet searches. I knew little about the Hispanic troubles in LA, and learned so much. That’s when you know a show is good, if it spurs one on to do research.
I’m very sad the show won’t be renewed. It was one of the few good scripted dramas so hard to find amid all the reality TV shows. I loved this show.
This really pisses me off. I loved this show. Of course, anything with Nathan Lane, is top notch. It would probably do better on the #1 premium network, HBO.
Look what happened to my fave, “Ray Donovan”. I’m still hoping another premium network picks it up.
I would have watched it! Thought it was good, even though in 1938, it’s relevant today!
We will miss it
Was looking forward to season 2. It was captivating. Very disappointed that’s it’s not returning.
I liked this series a lot. Wish it was going to continue
I liked this series very much. Wish it was going to continue.
Great show, thrilling great acting , different, very very disappointing. Hopefully they’ll change their minds.
Rich, I doubt they’ll pick it back up.
Well…they did it again and cancelled another good show. I watched it every week though I am not in the right age group that counts and that sucks. They should count older people too. We do watch TV. Stupid move I think.
they screwed up PD City of Angels was great TV.
One more comment. The acting of the entire cast was PHENOMENAL!
Although I feel for all who argue for another season of City of Angels, and I strongly agree with those who lament the overall boneheadedness of Showtime’s programming executives (BAD call on Ray Donovan!), This series felt like a “one-off” from the beginning. After watching the last episode I did not expect a continuation. I mean, where else can the story go? WWII begins, the Nazi’s lose, and the highways are constructed. End of story.
I get where you’re coming from, Andre. Check my comments, about Ray Donovan.
I’m re-watching Ray Donovan on Peacock. I forgot how amazing and multi-layered the show is. Its cancellation is a travesty of poor decision making. I know that my comment about City of Angels wasn’t too favorably received, but I stand by my opinion. The series seemed like it was a one-shot, all the loose ends were tied off, and especially so when Molly died…
