It was a very positive start for the series and was the first time that the network won the timeslot (other than the Olympics) since November 2008. On the downside, a significant number of viewers stopped watching between the first and second half hours. Will this series last? We’ll have to see how well Smash performs over the next several weeks.
Note: These ratings are collected by the Nielsen company and are the final national numbers. These are different from the fast affiliate numbers which are just estimates of the actual ratings and are reported on by most other outlets. The final nationals are typically released within 24 hours of the programming or, in the case of weekends and holidays, a couple days later.
What do you think? Do you like the Smash TV series? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?

I love this show. I have watched every episode so far, and when I can’t watch, I record it. I find the story line interesting, and I enjoy the music and dancing. I actually would like to go to the fictional show that they are producing. Sure, some of the situations are made up, but on the whole, I think that this is a great show. But then, I also like to go to shows on Broadway, and I enjoy watching the Toni Awards as well.
I must say I have really been enjoying this show. The only cast member who I don’t care for is Katherine McPhee. A great singer but cannot act. I guess it’s more of a personal opinion. I remember McPhee from her “American Idol” days. When a reporter wanted to interview her, she completely snubbed him. She seemed to always have her nose in the air. I personally don’t like people that act like that.
I love the show! I think the writing is good, the acting is great, the storyline is good- I’m hooked.
Smash is the worst show I have ever seen. Reasons: – Who goes into a broadway audition and sings Beautiful by Christina Aguilera? – The acting is SO BAD. The worst are the husband and especially the son of Debra Messing’s character. – The script makes me want to scream. Actually, I did start yelling during the episode when Debra Messing’s character read her letter to the parents of her future adopted child, with some bull about HEARING HER VOICE ON THE WIND, because it was just so bad. Cliche after cliche after cliche. – Speaking of cliche’s, oh I’ve… Read more »
Luv it!! Hope it continues!
Love it.
SMASH is fantastic — a terrific cast and a real insider’s view of how theater works. Having real-life folks (Manny Azenberg, Nick Jonas) adds to the appea. The singing and dancing are first rate. Keep SMASH going, please NBC!
LOVE it! KEEP it! refreshing, original. best new show on nbc in forever….or since prime suspect, which you punted. VERY good.
Cancel it. Couldn’t sit through it. Boring. Horrible acting.
I tried. I really wanted to like it. But, it’s sooo boring, predictable and SLOW!
Smash is terrible, boring and not worth renewing!
I thought they were trying to get rid of soap operas on the networks. So what do they do, put one on prime time television. It’s terrible!
PRIME SUSPECT -and- THE FIRM:
Loved both of these two shows. So naturally, NBC cancels both of them.
SMASH:
Could care less about this piece of crap. So I’m sure NBC will stand behind this garbage and keep renewing it for many seasons to come.
Why do I even waste my time watching NBC anymore?
I agree, I actually thought Prime suspect was a great show, cant believe it didnt make it!
Creative, innovative television. Hooked me right from the start. I’m a fan of Messing’s work and it’s great to see her in such an interesting role. The musical numbers are first rate and performed by a talented cast. I am looking forward to this season and hoping Smash is a smash!
In the 60 year history of network TV programming, no series based on a Broadway show theme has succeeded. NBC programming, unlike the days of Tinker and Tartikoff, is in the hands of inexperienced youth, most of whom happen to be influenced by their personal lifestyles and desires, which are totally opposite of the majority of America’s viewers.
Excellent analysis. On point re: NBC’s new director of programming. Called “Smash” his “passion project.” What else should we expect from the network that cancelled Law & Order, Southland, etc. These series must have scored low on the “mindless entertainment” meter!
