Last May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.
With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.
Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.
The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.
To no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?
UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

Trauma was a good show with a great cast. I think dropping it was a bad decision by NBC.
Trauma was one of the better, more exciting and realistic shows on TV. Many of the cast members were great and the chemistry between them was great. I am amazed that NBC dropped it. Just one of the many dumb decisions by NBC.
Trauma had a lot of good character dynamics – some just beginning to develop as the audience grew to know them. Premature cancellation is putting it mildly- it deserves more air time – I, too turned to NBC for this show instead of CBS. Mercy is a dud – have some mercy on your viewers – ditch that and bring back the Trauma series.
Traumatized
Trauma will be missed by my family. If there is anyway to bring it back please do so.
Trauma and Mercy were worst insults to healthcare professionals, and Army nurses everywhere!!! Most healthcare workers DO not act like the ignorant adrenaline junkies as portrayed in those “stupid” shows, I am SO glad to be overseas, and not even have to see the commercials for them anymore.
That really sucks they cancelled trauma! I like and watch both mercy and trauma. who,s fault is it that brought mercy early anyway?? It is not our fault. I would have watch both on demand.. record on dvr …plus watch it when it normally airs. It was on at least 2 TVs in my house.
i have been deployed for the past 6 mths, so i have not be able to watch any new series, but we now have a “media web” so that we can watch different shows and “trauma” was recently added to the web, i new with the first 10 minutes of episode 1 that is was going to be a new show of mine, but i have just found out that the series has been cancelled. this is very upsetting, i was looking forward to coming back home and having a new tv show to watch. please bring back “trauma”.. i… Read more »
Trauma was excellent. Give it more time
was best show of the season
Trauma was the best show on the air this season! I was really looking forward to is starting again! It was BY FAR the best show on NBC this year! Mercy sucks. take that off instead! bring back trauma!
Don’t cancel it!! It’s just getting started like any new drama. The ratings were low because it’s shown on Monday night when everybody is watching Dancing with the Stars. (including me). I rarely saw any ads for the show.
Mercy is absolutely one of the worst shows ever aired. The acting, especially the principal character (the blonde bimbo), is the worst of the lot. I’m amazed that NBC would cancel Trauma and keep Mercy. Trauma was one of the best new shows this year. Normally I keep tuned to CBS but Trauma drew me away to NBC for their show. Now it’s cancelled. This is almost as bad as CBS picking up Medium which is actually worse than Mercy.
That sucks!!!! I know plenty of people that watched this show and it was the bomb. They really need to bring it back even if has to be on a different night, JUST BRING IT BACK NOW!!!!!!
Please bring “Trauma” back. I think your main undoing is stacking “Trauma” in a time slot opposite “Dancing With The Stars”. Trauma is a new fresh drama and I love it. Please put it on a different night and a different time slot and you will have a winner. To put that much creative work and effort into a terrific show and then pitting it against a known family friendly show like Dancing With The Stars is just a bad move. It’s like dropping a bowling ball on your foot and not being able to figure out why your toes… Read more »
Just like NBC start off a show that is great and instead of building an audience cancel it.Maybe someone should tell NBC not every show gets great ratings from the start, a lot of great shows have build up a following. Why doesnt NBC kill some of the stupid shows they have like Leno, I am sorry it needs to be put to rest like years ago! He has no one left to interview does anyone watch him??? So far NBC has canceled Southland and now Trauma. Hey is there a newtwork out there with a set of —– if… Read more »
