Last May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.
With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.
Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.
The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.
To no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?
UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

I too am very disappointed that Trauma is cancelled. I looked forward each week to following the characters and drama. I work in the medical field and found the emotions of the paramedics and the hospital staff to show the public we are not treating patients as numbers but individuals If I could not watch the show, I could watch it on primetime on demand. While other shows remain on primetime TV I do not understand why the good ones are cancelled. Please bring Trauma back!
im really upset with NBC for cancelling such a good show im really considering being a paramedic and that was my favorite show it gave me the inspiration for the medical profession i hate that reality tv takes the place of good programming jeff spearman detroit michigan
I don’t know if any of the “Powers of be” actually read any of these Blogs or not, but I think that canceling this show is a big mistake. I personally am getting very tired of seeing shows like this one, that are a tribute to the men & women who put their lives on the line to make ours better and take a back seat to some “not-so reality show” where the end result is so meaningless and empty. When will the people wake up and quit supporting those type shows. We need more “reality” like these shows. This… Read more »
NBC is going to loose my entire family if they dont bring Trauma Back I know 6 people in my immediate family is not much however the 300 in my extended family have decided to boycot NBC. THIS IS BS Subtracts that from the the 5.6 mil and I hope more will follow .
I think it is a pity that foolish, meaningless shows remain on the air while shows like TRAUMA have been canceled. Is the viewing audience so shallow that a show which offers thoughtful, provocative drama depicting a profession so noble can be dropped in favor of foolish junk which doesn’t offer anything but a few shallow laughs. No wonder NBC is last in all the ratings.
So disappointed about losing Trauma on TV. Loved the show and couldn’t wait to see the next week and on top of everything it was really getting goo. Loved the characters too! Sorry to see it go. Wish comments could bring it back I would write one everyday.
This show was AWESOME….and I don’t say that lightly. I consider myself a rather persnickety TV viewer and can’t stand most of what is aired. However, Trauma is/was my FAVORITE show this season! NBC never fails to let me down with their programming choices. I do think that the Monday night time slot was certainly a set-up for failure. Trying a different time slot would have been a wiser choice, but then, I am not one of the wise ones working for the network! I am actually becoming afraid to like any new show…..because for sure it will be canceled.… Read more »
u guys can take TRAUMA! off but leave shows like the office on that is so dumb is that wat we have come 2 u think ppl want to watch idiots that make no sence. trauma at least show things that truly happen im DONE WATCHING NBC!!!!!!!! its all bs for the money not wat the ppl want
I cannot believe that such a great show is being canceled. My whole family loved it and we are all medical professionals!
The tv show Trauma was so unique. You never knew what was going to happen. It kept you in suspence. This is one of the BEST shows my husband and I have seen since “24”. A lot of action, things you hear about but never see. Wouldn’g doubt it if it was written from actual incidences. Just because it didn’t get the ratting you need, but then you didn’t give it much of a chance. We sure hope you give this show another chance because it is FANTASTIC. We are very dissapointed. It’s not like you have anything good on… Read more »
Yeah they dropped ER ( in which I don’t think was an NBC show) so I didn’t have a decent show to watch anymore, great they brought out Trauma in which I really liked a lot in which I thought was a lot like ER just it was actual events happening before the hosiptal vist. WE MISS IT BRING BACK TRAUMA! WE WANT TRAUMA BACK! IT WAS THE BEST SHOW ON TV!
Why do they always cancel the good shows?! I am very annoyed and sick of the reality BS!!!! My entire family loved the show Trauma!!!!!!
You have lost your mind taking trauma off it is so much better than mercy. Now I know why I dont watch much tv, because they only keep airing the lame shows.
WHY????????????????????did you cancel Trauma! GET RID OF HEROES, BIGGEST LOSER, 30 ROCK and bring back Trauma! It is the only show on NBC that I watch my loyalties are standing by CBS after all they picked up Medium that NBC stupidly dropped!!! The station is losing money because a bunch on idiots in New York are bradcasting STUPID shows. It wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t decide to air some type of show where we all watch everyone take a “reality” piss and dump in the bathroom!!! ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I watch both Trauma and Mercy…..if anything, Mercy should have went…..but I like them both. I really liked Trauma, they should keep it around
