The 9-1-1 show’s disasters will keep coming but not on FOX. The network has opted not to renew its highest-rated show, so it’s moving over to ABC for its seventh season.
A procedural drama series created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, the 9-1-1 TV show stars Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Kenneth Choi, Aisha Hinds, Ryan Guzman, Corinne Massiah, Marcanthonee Jon Reis, and Gavin McHugh. Inspired by real-life experiences of first responders, this show centers on the police officers, firefighters, and dispatchers who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking, and heart-stopping situations. These emergency responders must try to balance saving those at their most vulnerable and solving the problems in their own lives.
On Monday nights, the sixth season of 9-1-1 averages a 0.61 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 4.77 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (includes all DVR playback through 3:00 AM). Compared to season five, that’s down by 20% in the demo and down by 8% in viewership. In the live+7 day ratings, the show picks up more than 50% more viewers.
While FOX’s move to cancel its highest-rated rated show might seem crazy, it actually makes sense, given the changing television landscape. Fewer and fewer people are watching shows via linear networks, and 9-1-1’s production company, 20th Century Television, and FOX are no longer under the same corporate umbrella. The first-responder drama costs $9-10 million an episode to produce and it’s just too expensive for FOX since they don’t share in the series’ long-term profits.
Disney owns 20th Century TV and ABC, and also controls Hulu, where 9-1-1 is a top performer. Last year, the renewals of 9-1-1 and The Resident came down to the wire because of economics. This year, they’ve both been cancelled.
“Thanks to the creative drive of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, as well as the talented cast, 9-1-1 has been one of the most defining and original dramas on network television over the last six seasons and we are honored to bring it to the esteemed group of series on ABC,” said Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group. “It’s a privilege to keep 9-1-1 in the family with 20th Television producing, and we look forward to telling more heart-racing and uplifting stories about these beloved characters on our air.”
Meanwhile, the 9-1-1: Lone Star series has been renewed for a fifth season on FOX. It remains to be seen if viewers will get any more crossovers.
What do you think? Do you enjoy watching the 9-1-1 TV series on FOX? Are you glad the series has been renewed for a seventh season, but on ABC? Were you expecting the series to be cancelled?
Love the 911 shows, they are well written and full of action. Happy that it is moving to ABC,
Love both the 911 shows and The Resident!
In my city, they’ve been airing the old episodes of 911 on the local ABC station since last September already. It won’t be a big stretch to have the new episodes air on the network. I guess we won’t have anymore crossovers between 911 & 911:Lonestar since they air on rival networks now.
I saw this coming, after Fox cancelled The Resident. They’re gutting their ABC programming, because they don’t want to pay the licensing fees anymore. Both were sixth season shows owned by Disney, that Fox has been paying exorbitant licensing fees for, ever since they sold 20th Television to Disney in late 2018. Fox lost ownership years ago, and have been paying Disney licensing fees for both shows ever since. Disney saved 9-1-1, because it has stronger ratings and makes a lot of money for them. It’s worth the cost. Fox is only keeping 9-1-1: Lone Star, since it’s cheaper. If… Read more »
That’s a good point Katherine & never thought of it that way why FOX isn’t paying their shows well when ABC saved it. And if you read my comment I’m sure you’ll agree too.
So weird why FOX cancelled it, didn’t expect that either, was blown away ABC saved it & I never watched it before actually or Lone Star. Now the question for next season, how are they gonna do a crossover for both of them since they’re not on the same network anymore? I guess will have to see what happens like NCIS, FBI, Law & Order & Chicago almost every year.
Thank the good lord that ABC picked up this show, how rotten that Fox canceled the show
I think this is a sign that network TV shows are dying. The CW is looking to air cheaper shows (about $1M per episode) and FOX was not getting the ratings for 9-1-1’s production costs. $9M — $10M per episode means they are paying $162M — $180M per season. Now realize that with 4.815 million viewers on average per episode it means they are paying about $2 for each viewer.
Hopefully ABC will be able to afford to keep it on the air for a few more years.
Love the show, happy that it has been picked up by ABC
So glad that ABC has picked up this show! It is one of my favorites. 911 Lone Star can’t even hold a candle to 911 and Lone Star remains??? Doesn’t even make sense. Thank you ABC for keeping this show alive.
FOX having to cough up damages recently will have had some bearing of its production. Dominion and the lies!
The Fox broadcast network has nothing to do with Fox News. They are two separate entities.
Well FOX you have never been a strong contender in our household. Cancelling your best show is likely an indication why. With only Lone Star left and not nearly as good I will drop FOX after the season finale and switch up cable pics for something better. Even the CW rates higher now lol.
As long as 9-1-1 is renewed every year. I love that show.
As long as it’s renewed… Love 911!!
Well I agree that 911 Lone Star is a terribly unrealistic show which Rob Lowe’s contributes to 99% of it’s failure! So it’s Fox loss and ABC’s gain, rating for them will escalate. 🙂
As long as it is renewed e Somewhere!
I totally agree with you I love the show
THIS IS ABSURB 911 LONE STAR SUCKS YET U RENEWED IT ON FOX AND MOVE 911 TO ABC WOW U PEOPLE SUCK
Everyone has their own opinions on what shows they like. The article said it was getting too expensive to continue on Fox. I don’t understand why people don’t get that. Networks don’t cancel shows just for the heck of it. Plenty of people like 911: Lonestar.
