Out with the old, in with the new. At this week’s upfront presentations, ABC chief Channing Dungey explained the network’s decision to cancel both Nashville and Castle, TVInsider reports.
Earlier, we reported ABC had cancelled Nashville after four seasons, while Castle was cancelled after eight.
When asked why the network decided to end the two series, Dungey explained it was a combination of financial reasons and wanting room for new shows in the network’s 2016-17 lineup:
“In terms of the behind-the-scenes thing that were happening on both Castle and Nashville, the studios in each case were looking for the best creative and financial ways to make room for a ninth season of Castle and a fifth season of Nashville. They were definitely engaged in a bunch of conversations on a studio level on what would set them up the best for success should they get the order.
… in terms of what we were discussing internally… it was the best fit for things on the schedule. Obviously looking at ratings, looking at our own finances, looking at some of the new development. A lot of those decisions did come down to the wire, which is the difficult thing about these jobs: you have to weigh and measure a bunch of different things. At the end of the day, it didn’t feel that—even though both Castle and Nashville were wonderful shows for us and good performers for a long time—the future for us did not really lie in those shows.”
What do you think? Were you a fan of either Castle or Nashville? Do you think ABC should’ve renewed both?
Nashville is the only show I watch and been hooked since the beginning. I’m done with ABC and any new shows they think will serve them better financially. Hope Netflix picks up Nashville and makes a killing.
Please don’t take Nashville off I love this show, I can’t weight until wensday nights , so I can see what happens on Nashville, ,,!!!!!! I really do love the show,
Please don’t cancell Nashville. I love everything about the show. It is because of this show that I realize I like country music
Nashville is a great show, good storylines and GREAT music, was shocked to hear after tonight’s show that next week was the series finale. Hope abc reconsiders, and if not, that it will be picked up by another network, cable, Netflix or Amazon prime.
Watched every episode of Nashville. Loved that show. My favorite. Won’t be watching any replacements. Will be watching other channels. So long ABC.
Shame on you cancel the good shows and you keep the junk!
Nashville is superb, please don’t cancel this show. There is so much more you can explore. All of my friends and I are crushed hearing you are cancelling this show. Hope you reconsider.
Please keep Nashville. I
this show. The music, the people, the story line. I hope another network picks it up.
Hate to hear this! Loved watching it every Wednesday night. I’m watching it now.Why take off a popular show to replace it with something else?
Please, please tell me if you found another network for Nashville? It’s so sad that you cancelled. I think you needed new writers; not cancellation. I’m boycotting ABC.
I am very disappointed that Nashville is canceled. I love that show. There are so many horrible shows on TV and you’re cancelling one of the best
It is a scary thought that this kind of stupidity is running t.v. stations. Getting rid of two awesome shows doesn’t say much for the kind of station this is.
I can’t believe you cancelled Nashville. I look forward to watching that every week. It’s one of the few ABC shows I watch. Stupid decision if you ask me!!!
Looking at their finances??? Seriously? A station owned by Disney, and you expect the viewers to buy into that garbage? Puuleeze!! Nashville is one of the best shows on TV, appealing to people who want substance, great acting by great actors/ actresses, wonderful music, filmed on location, and a realistic storyline!! All ABC does these days is kill shows that require paying attention, that ‘adults’ enjoy, only to be replaced by mindless drivel that appeal to IQ’s of 10! It’s really pathetic that you would cancel this show after 4 years, when you know as well as we do, you… Read more »
Absolutely love Nashville Xmas great story line, fantastic acting, and music to love. I hv all the CD music. Looked forward to it. Will really miss. A major favorite. Pls keep making music guys.
I’d love to see what those finances really are. Especially for a Network that is owned by DISNEY and owns a share of HULU. CASTLE’s biggest problems were the show runners, the Loksat story line and the fact that Blindspot took off so well. The 6 week break ABC gave it hurt also. Dis the fact that Shonda Rimes wanted to bring back the EXTREMELY LOW RATED THE CATCH also figure in? It must have.
I have been watching The Catch, and can’t seem to get into it. This is not one of the shows Inwill continue to watch.
