Why did CBS just cancel most of their new TV shows? Recently, network boss Kelly Kahl spoke with Deadline about the decision to cancel Broke, Carol’s Second Act, Tommy, and God Friended Me.
With the exception of God Friended Me, which wrapped its second season this spring, all the shows cancelled debuted during the 2019-20 season. CBS also cancelled Man with a Plan, which is currently airing its fourth season.
Speaking to Deadline, Kahl revealed it was a “tough” decision to cancel Broke, God Friended Me, Carol’s Second Act, and Tommy:
At the end of the day they weren’t doing the numbers we were hoping for, and despite liking them creatively, knowing timely decisions were upon us, we had to make tough calls to move on from those shows. You want to keep them all for another season; that’s what makes these calls tough. You invest a lot of time and effort and people put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into these shows, and when you have to say goodbye. It’s a tough call.”

I am disappointed that God Friended Me was canceled. I have not missed an episode. If the Network wants to manage traffic to it’s shows, then good “appointment” tv is the best way to do that. God Friended Me is a feel-good way to transition back to the work week. I also appreciated the diverse characters and cast.
Love Edie Falco and enjoyed watching Tommy, sad it’s been cancelled. Also thought Carol’s Second Act was VERY funny. DVR’d both shows weekly to make sure I didn’t miss an episode. CBS, please reconsider.
God Friended me was one of my favorite shows too! Please bring it back!!

I was a big fan of God Friended Me and Tommy. I hated to hear they were being cancelled. I would never miss an episode. I thought both to be very good shows with good messages and delivered well.
Saddens me to see them go. Hope there is some Avenue for reconsideration.
God Friended Me was one of our favorite shows. Never missed an episode. Very disappointed! Are we being pushed to another network? I hope not, as CBS has been one of our favorites.
I don’t stream at all. Don’t believe in streaming. Only like tradional tv.

I’m really bummed that you canceled Tommy and God Friended Me. Can’t you reconsider?!! I’m so tired of the good shows being cancelled. It’s makes it hard when you get into watching a season and then it gets cancelled. Why even watch TV anymore when the good shows get cancelled. Shame on you!!
I think it is totally ridiculous to cancel a series after one season. Tommy’s ratings were not that horrible and Broke did not even get a full season. It seems CBS has a problem with keeping shows that have female leads.
We need “God Friended Me” more than ever. Our world is a mess. Our country is a mess. People are dying every day. GFM gave us a glimmer of hope, that there is goodness in this world…for no other reason than doing good is the right thing to do. It’s a show with depth, feeling, love, pain, tears, and goodness. PLEASE BRING IT BACK.

I’m disappointed god Friended Me was canceled. I thought it was a good show. It always held my interest. What’s coming to replace all these cancellations?
We really enjoyed God friended Me and Tommy. Broke was just ok, however the actors were great. Sorry to see they r gone.
I loved God Friended Me! I’m very disappointed it ended! I know it would have to end at some point, but I don’t think it was developed as far as it could have been. Tommy was interesting, I would definitely have continued watching! I enjoyed Carol’s second act, it was funny, but it also covered relationships, starting a new career later in life, and taught a bit about people in the medical field, something we really need to learn about especially right now! These shows had so much more substance to them, than the mindless game shows and the like… Read more »
