Though Harry’s Law was the most-watched scripted TV show on NBC this season, the network cancelled it. As I’ve suggested in the past, advertisers favor shows that attract those in the 18-49 demographic. Though Harry’s Law had a lot of viewers, the legal series had some of the lowest demographic numbers on the network.
When asked why Kathy Bates and company had been let go, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said, “It was a difficult decision. Everyone here respects Harry’s Law a lot but we were finding it hard to grow the audience for it. Its audience skewed very old. It’s hard to monetize that.”
Bates broke the news of the show’s cancellation over the weekend. She wrote to fans, “Sad news today. Harry’s Law will not be renewed for a 3rd season. We are all terribly sad. Many thanks for all your support.”

The actress later noted, “Waiting for this verdict was tough. We wrapped a month ago so it was a very long wait!”
Bates reconciled, “Tough day getting used to the idea of no more Harry. Think I’ll keep her with me 4ever.”
When asked if there was a possibility that Harry’s Law might move to cable, Bates responded, “No hope.” But, responding to an inquiry last night on the subject, Bates wrote, “Not sure, but don’t think so.”
Justine Lupe, who played Phoebe Blake, wrote, “Sad day. Little bit of heartbreak. What a gift to had had this time.”
Actress Karen Olivo, who joined the cast in season two as Cassie Reynolds, responded with a message to her castmates, “It was an honor, my friends!”
Nathan Corddry, who’d been playing Adam Branch since the show began, noted, “I’d thank everyone individually, but the list is too long.Never was happier professionally. Thank you for a wondrful 2 years. #tough2swallow”
What do you think? Are you going to miss Harry’s Law as much as the cast will? If the show did move to another channel, would you follow it?
I loved Harry’s law, one of the best shows on NBC and TV period. And I hate NBC for canceling it which will translate into me not watching anything on NBC. Which in itself sucks because I did like SMASH!
Wow, how insulting it is to hear that we “skewed old” by NBC. My husband and I, as well as our 31-year-old daughter and her husband, were faithful watchers. For shame that such drivel as those so-called “talent” shows makes it and a show like this is axed!
the Silver Brigade should roust NBC – if they aren’t young, vulgar, or something of their body hanging out – they are a gonner!! SHAME
I cannot believe that this show was cancelled. It seems that the networks dont care what the older viewers watch. This is one of the best shows on the screen. Big mistake was made when this was cancelled.
MAYBE SOMEONE SHOULD ALERT AARP. THERE ARE MILLIONS OF US WHO ARE NOT IN THE 18-49 DEMOGRAPHICS AND LOVE HARRY’S LAW.
I WOULD WATCH IT ON ANY CHANNEL. MAYBE ION SHOULD PICK IT UP.
Hands-down, the best series of its genre on TV. NBC continues its roll down the slope. Perhaps it presents some politically uncomfortable dilemmas for NBC. I pray a wiser network picks it up.
I love Harry’s Law, I can not believe they cancelled this show. I love Kathy Bates in this show.
Tied with Blue Blood’s, Harry’s Law is the best show on TV . Evvery character is awesome and had so much more to do. Kathy Bates is a favorite of mine, no one compare to her! What a joke to cancel because we are too old to count for watching a TV show. Pretty pathetic. I hope to see someone else pick it up, the show is so worth it.
I truly cannot believe they cancelled this series. This was one of the few NBC series that I watched. I guess I will go back to watching only the news again on NBC. I have a question for the brains at NBC programming–Who spends the most money? your 18 yr olds, 20 yr olds or the 40-60 year olds? Gimme a break.
I love Harrys Law, it is a bright spot on a very dull line up of crap on the tube. It tackles current events from both sides of the fence and shows both arguments terrific like. Kathy is so credible and real, and Tommy Jefferson well, he is as naive as he is funny. Adam
Is a work in progress and Oliver is a mans man. Phoebe is cute and engaging. And Cassie is polished. All together they make a great chemistry. I hope cable has half a brain and picks it up they will never regret it.
I am so disappointed in everyone involved in “Harry’s” cancelation. I am a CBS follower and rarely wonder unto the other stations, but I did for Harry’s Law. “NBC has a WINNER! ”
There has to be a way around the advertising problem. The people at NBC who are in charge of good programing are suppose to be SMART that’s the reason they have the job. I don’t call canceling Harry’s Law smart. Use your brains and “FIX IT”!
I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Harry’s Law and think the people who make the decisions have blinders on their brains and eyes. Who do you think has time to watch TV? Retired people, older people! Who do you think has money to buy the products advertised on such shows? Certainly not the 18 to 49 group…they are in debt to pay for houses, trying to put food on the table and send kids to college.
So, let me get this right. Highest rated scripted show on TV. But, since the viewers were “older”, it wasn’t worth keeping. “NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said,……Its audience skewed very old. It’s hard to monetize that.” Gee, Bob…thanks. I didn’t realize the population with the most disposable income is not worth courting. I guess your network is not worth me watching…idiot….
Well, that’s it for me and NBC. It was the only program of theirs that I watched, other than the Today Show playing in the background while getting ready for work. CBS beats them hands down, and The Early Show deserves a hard look now. NBC – you want a younger brainless audience? You got it – stick it!
