Though Harry’s Law was the most-watched scripted TV show on NBC this season, the network cancelled it. As I’ve suggested in the past, advertisers favor shows that attract those in the 18-49 demographic. Though Harry’s Law had a lot of viewers, the legal series had some of the lowest demographic numbers on the network.
When asked why Kathy Bates and company had been let go, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said, “It was a difficult decision. Everyone here respects Harry’s Law a lot but we were finding it hard to grow the audience for it. Its audience skewed very old. It’s hard to monetize that.”
Bates broke the news of the show’s cancellation over the weekend. She wrote to fans, “Sad news today. Harry’s Law will not be renewed for a 3rd season. We are all terribly sad. Many thanks for all your support.”

The actress later noted, “Waiting for this verdict was tough. We wrapped a month ago so it was a very long wait!”
Bates reconciled, “Tough day getting used to the idea of no more Harry. Think I’ll keep her with me 4ever.”
When asked if there was a possibility that Harry’s Law might move to cable, Bates responded, “No hope.” But, responding to an inquiry last night on the subject, Bates wrote, “Not sure, but don’t think so.”
Justine Lupe, who played Phoebe Blake, wrote, “Sad day. Little bit of heartbreak. What a gift to had had this time.”
Actress Karen Olivo, who joined the cast in season two as Cassie Reynolds, responded with a message to her castmates, “It was an honor, my friends!”
Nathan Corddry, who’d been playing Adam Branch since the show began, noted, “I’d thank everyone individually, but the list is too long.Never was happier professionally. Thank you for a wondrful 2 years. #tough2swallow”
What do you think? Are you going to miss Harry’s Law as much as the cast will? If the show did move to another channel, would you follow it?
Finally a show with substance, and it’s cancelled!
Harry’s Law was in our top three and we looked forward
to it every week. We certainly hope someone else picks
up this wonderful show. The Allens
I don’t understand the “demograohics”. There are more over 49 year olfs that are reliable television viewers. Harry Law was a wonderful change from the over played reality shows. The characters managed to be callous in a clever way, the wit was never ending and actors are well casted. Ho could you not look forward to watching the ever entertaining facial expressions and witty missives Kathy Bates would have on each show. The show combined clever, humor, sadness in sotry content as well as totally believable characters. NBC needs to ask the public who keeps them afloat whose “boat we… Read more »
I am constantly amazed that the networks cancel excellent shows because they don’t have top ratings in the 18-49 age group. There really is more to life than reality shows, and to say it was cancelled because it didn’t meet the 18-49 age group choice absolutely astounds me. As one other viewer said, put Harry’s Law on cable and the ratings would zoom upward.
My favorite show on TV. Will gladly watch om any channel or cable outlet. Only show I watch every week.
How can you have good ratings and CANCEL, what is up with this! We love the show and so disappointed but understand why we spend most of our time on CBS.
NBC sucks! As they cancel shows, they leave you hanging! Why bother to watch anything on NBC …?
i was really upset when i heard that harrys law was cancelled . someone should tell the ten year olds running programing at nbc that cbs always wins in the ratings because they appreciate the fact that the so called target generation not only doesnt watch programs on television , but they also have far less money to buy sponsers products. cbs gear their programs to people like me who are over 50 , educated and have money to buy cars , computers , smart phones and i pads ….i guess the idiots at nbc and their sponsers dont understand… Read more »
I am very disappointed that the show was cancelled. I looked forward to it every week
As usual another well written show falls by the wayside. It makes room for more sitcoms, which seem to be the only format the morons that watch NBC can comprehend. Who runs NBC anyway?
I am furious and saddened by the cancellation of this great show. I will miss Kathy, Chris MacDonald and Mark Valley!!
I think Google should pick up this show and put it on youtube; I would watch it there, as well. What a shame NBC cancels one of the best female actors to ever grace the small screen (I think Kathy Bates lowered her standards to star in this show; a lot of movie actors find it beneath them, as they should, to do television), and yet they will continue to run a show like SNL that lost its relevance after the first cast ensemble left to do other things. I think NBC now stands for Nothing But Cowards. Good luck… Read more »
Okay, so the viewers are over the age of 49, but who has the most money to spend? This show revealed so much information in its program. Viewers could learn much about the legal system without having to endure a gory murder each week. The wisdom, the wit, and pure entertainment was invaluable each week. NBC now stands for Next Butt Chewed…you can count on being even lower in the standings after this cancellation!
Excellent show. Fantastic writing. They should get AWARDS, not pink slips.
I absolutely would watch on annother chanel, any other chanel. Being 57 yrs. old,
I am disgusted that they think my age group can’t be “monetized” or whatever. 18 to 49
is deified by these short-sighted doofuses at NBC. Ask Jay Leno and his fans about
the wisdom upstairs at that network!!
As to the cancellation, I vote “No”!!
We looked forward to watching Harry’s Law every week. Besides “Smash”, Harry’s Law is the best show on TV….bar none! What’s the matter with you people at NBC? Put Harry’s Law on cable and you’ll see the audience increase.
again another stroke of programming genius! cancel a show that is well-written, well-acted and one which presented thought provoking situations. TV panders to the ignorant. that’s how they get their demographics. dumb it all down to cater to an ever increasing dumber audience. Flash Forward is another example. geez, you had to think and listen carefully to appreciate it. shame on the writers!
