CBS viewers recently saw the cancellations of three established scripted shows – Magnum PI, B Positive, and United States of Al. Now, CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl has addressed the reasoning behind those ‘tough’ cancellations.
Rumors that surrounded Magnum PI made it seem like licensing fee issues were behind the cancellation of the drama series. Deadline reports that the series’ cancellation may have been influenced by “the bruising negotiations” CBS had to go through with Universal Television over the renewals of higher-rated dramas FBI, FBI: Most Wanted, FBI: International, and The Equalizer. Kahl said the following:
“You have some tough decisions to make and you have lots of factors — and I’m not going to rule [the licensing fee] out as one of them. It was a great team to work with, and one of the tougher decisions we had to make.”
Magnum PI, starring Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang, and Amy Hill, aired for four seasons on CBS.
As for the two Chuck Lorre comedies cancelled by the network, the decision was difficult. Kahl said the following about cancelling B Positive and the United States of Al:
“I’m not going to pretend and tell you [Lorre] was happy. He was disappointed with the news but he’s the single most talented comedy producer I’ve certainly ever worked with.”
CBS is already working with Lorre on new comedy shows.
The three series are produced or licensed by outside studios and networks see less profit from those due to the decline of revenue from traditional television viewing and the shift to streaming.
What do you think? Were you surprised by the cancellations of Magnum PI, B Positive, and United States of Al by CBS? Did you want more seasons of these three shows?

Why MAGNUM PI ? That’s a great Friday night show / the actors /characters are great and good storylines and of course the scenery is wonderful. What CBS should cancel is Survivor / how can you have a BS show like that on TV , when there are real people trying to survive a war in UKRAINIAN! / CBS should be ashamed of themselves!!!!
CBS…big mistake! Magnum PI was a really good show. I won’t be watching the crap you have planned for your new lineup
Cbs needs to get there head out of their ass magnum pi was a great drama just like MacGyver another great drama
I agree it was a big mistake to cancel Magnum. Really enjoyed the show. Getting tired of the shows being replaced with the reality shows. Started streaming more.
Love love love Magnum! And loved United States of Al – very witty show. I don’t watch much TV but never missed those two shows. Please sort this out CBS and bring them back. Fri night TV is generally crappy- but not Magnum! It was a fun way to end the week.
Good Sam wasn’t given a chance. Up against the three Chicago shows on NBC. Really good show with a different premise.
I’ll really miss B Positive! Love that show!
United States of AL is one of the most clever, witty and best cast show in a very long time. It was funny and always had a message to tell. ie: how many of you knew about the thousands of Afghan interpreters trying to leave for safety???
Please reconsider.
I love magnum p.i.
It’s one I can watch over and over
B Positive shouldn’t have made it past first season, was not interesting! Making big mistake canceling Magnum PI and United States of Al!!! BIG MISTAKE!!!!
For the love of God do not cancel Magnum P.I we truly enjoyed & love the Series of Magnum!! One of the best shows /series !! Please Don’t cancel this show! The cast are amazing, every series of the story are really has meaning and honestly I love all the cast especially “Thomas Magnum & Higgins” perfect chemistry!! why you guys has to take away our happiness of watching “Magnum P.I WHYYYYYY
I think it was a great series and I think that they made it big mistake
First MacGyver now Magnum PI… You have officially lost this Friday night viewer….!
I am very disappointed in the cancellation of MagnumPI and I would really like the powers that be to rethink this decision and renew this well made show.
The comedies were garbage anyway. Magnum was the only thing good on Fridays. I’m under 75 so I could care less about blue bloods. So pissed…
