What’s This TV Show About?
An action-adventure drama series airing on the NBC television network, the Magnum PI TV show stars Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Amy Hill, and Tim Kang. This reboot of the 1980s TV show follows Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), a decorated former Navy SEAL who repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. He lives in a guest cottage on Robin’s Nest, the luxurious estate where he works as a security consultant to supplement his P.I. business. The “majordomo” of the property is Juliet Higgins (Weeks), a beautiful and commanding disavowed MI:6 agent who keeps Magnum in line. When Magnum needs backup on a job, he turns to his trusted buddies and fellow POW survivors, chopper pilot Theodore “TC” Calvin (Hill) and Orville “Rick” Wright (Knighton), a former Marine door-gunner who now runs a nightclub. Magnum frequently has run-ins with police detective Gordon Katsumoto (Kang) and the two are more alike than either cares to admit. The unofficial “House Mom” and cultural curator of Robin’s Nest, Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta (Hill) is also one of Magnum’s biggest fans.
Season Five Ratings
The first half of the fifth season of Magnum PI (which aired during the 2022-23 season) averaged a 0.27 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.35 million viewers. Compared to season four (which aired on CBS), that’s down by 35% in the demo and down by 36% in viewership in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM).
The second half of the fifth season of Magnum PI (which airs during the 2023-24 season) averaged a 0.26 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 3.31 million viewers. Compared to season four (which aired on CBS), that’s down by 38% in the demo and down by 37% in viewership in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM).
While these numbers don’t include further delayed or streaming viewing, they are a very good indicator of how a show is performing, especially when compared to others on the same channel. There can be other economic factors involved in a show’s fate, but typically the higher-rated series are renewed and the lower-rated ones are cancelled. Find out how Magnum PI stacks up against other NBC TV shows.
Magnum PI has been cancelled, so there will not be a sixth season. Could the series be revived someday? Stay tuned for further updates.
Telly’s Take
Will NBC cancel or renew Magnum PI for season six? Wasn’t it already renewed? An early report indicated NBC had picked up the series for seasons five and six of 10 episodes each. However, we later learned it was actually renewed for a fifth season of 20 episodes, perhaps to be split into two parts. Will there be a sixth season? NBCUniversal owns the series, so despite low linear ratings, I think the show will be renewed — as long as key cast members want to keep making the show. I’ll update this page with breaking developments. Subscribe for free alerts on Magnum PI cancellation or renewal news.
6/24/23 update: Magnum PI has been cancelled by NBC after five seasons.

What do you think? Were you hoping the Magnum PI TV show would be renewed for a sixth season? Are you sorry that NBC cancelled this TV series, instead?
Please! Please! Renew Magnum PI! I love the cast and comraddery. It’s my favorite feel good show on TV. We NEED Magnum! The cases are intriguing but, their relationships are what make it. I think you have to be older to understand a friendship like that. Born through trauma, respect and the certainty that no one stays behind. It doesn’t happen to everyone but, if it does, you know that it’s both precious and rare. Don’t replace it with some senseless comedy. Please. We need Magnum and crew!
PLEASE, PLEASE keep Magnum going this year—2023–and hopefully for many years to come—I have never loved another tv series more ( and many of my friends agree) .

Love the show me and my family watch it online all the time hope they renew it great actor and actresses to watch the 80s show to growing up love it to
I just love this show. It deals with everything while being entertaining. The whole family can watch it. Love the military references, views of Hawaii and the interaction between characters. Sunday night is a hard night because of all the Sunday interruptions like football, awards, March madness. People are great at recording and watching later or watching on Peacock after the fact. This is a great show. Please keep it going . Thanks NBC
I thought NBC was going to give 20 episodes 10 for season 5 and 10 for season 6

NBC, thank you for saving it from CBS’ short-sighted decision. Please keep it going.
