Although it just premiered on PBS last night, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show has been cancelled after only one season, by ITV. A prequel to the Helen Mirren police drama, and adapted from the Lynda La Plante novel Tennison, the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV show aired on the UK network as Prime Suspect 1973.
Prime Suspect: Tennison stars Stefanie Martini as Jane Tennison. The ITV and PBS TV series cast also includes: Sam Reid, Blake Harrison, Alun Armstrong, Ruth Sheen, Jessica Gunning, Andrew Brooke, Nick Sidi, Geraldine Somerville, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Nancy Carroll, Rosie Day, Lex Shrapnel, Jay Taylor, Jacob James Beswick, Joshua Hill, Daniel Ezra, Tommy McDonnell, and Jordan Long.
Mirror reports:
ITV’s Prime Suspect prequel has been axed after just one run, despite pulling in six million viewers.
The decision not to reorder the retro series, set in 1973, comes after an unfortunate fallout with author Lynda La Plante .
It starred Stefanie Martini as a younger version of Helen Mirren’s character Jane Tennison, when she was a rookie PC.
La Plante had originally been lined up to adapt her novel Tennison for the channel, but later quit the production, citing artistic differences.
At the time she claimed to have been left “very sad” by the fallout, but declined to say what sparked it.
ITV drafted in another writer with bosses saying they were “grateful” to Lynda for allowing them to adapt her “brilliant book”.
She has since penned a follow-up novel, Hidden Killers, which sees Tennison as a detective in the late 70s. But ITV said there were no plans to adapt it.
“We’re very happy with the performance of Prime Suspect 1973 but not everything is meant to run and run,” said one source.
What do you think? Did you watch the Prime Suspect: Tennison TV series premiere on PBS? Will you keep watching, even though you know this TV show is cancelled?
As usual, a British crime drama so much better than anything made in America — loved this one a lot — all fine actors, and total frustration in our house, as we had recorded this but our recording cut out near the end, just after the Sargent was killed in the bank explosion; so, we don’t know how it ended. I’m not ready to by the whole series, and you apparently cannot watch just one episode. Could someone please tell me what happens after that? Sad that they’ve decided not to continue it. Somebody, get a grip! The show had… Read more »
I liked it too. Really only one surprise you missed. Came when Tennison finds out the good man was married and had children. LOL.
Good series. Will miss it!
Stupid ! Why cancel after a brilliant first season !
Stupid bloody people ! Terrific season 1 pity xx there’s no more.
They should never ended Tennison after one season !
The first six episodes were excellent. We are disappointed
the series has been cancelled. If the people at ITV have any sense they will do what is necessary to bring it back.
So stupid of all of you not to continue. Sorry.. but it’s the truth. Get over yourselves .. it’s a great show with great acting and great music. Shame on you all for letting it die
It’s always tragic when individual egos prevent audiences from enjoying a program they enjoy and more importantly WATCH! As an ex- Executive Producer of the top rated CBS daytime TV show in the USA, it’s criminal that a good show with great ratings and a desirable demographic, is allowed to be cancelled to satisfy a Network executive’s bruised ego!! They should have been fired immediately! BTW, to claim “a matter of principal”… translation = you guessed it. EGO!!
I loved Series 1, and disappointed that season 2 is not going into production. I absolutely loved the original version with Helen Mirren which I viewed multiple times, and Ms Martini was very convincing and extremely enjoyable in her interpretation of a young Helen Mirren. Too bad, I was really looking forward to seeing the cast in series 2
Loved this prequel !!! ITV needs to overcome the differences with the author!!! The author is the guide of the story!! They need to work with her not against her!!
Liked the prequel series very much. Characters were viable and interesting. Martini was engaging and not self- conscious so everyone did their job. Was looking fwd to more! Love Endeavour. Not only the boys are worth a lookback!
Loved it. Very fine acting. The show deserved at least a few more seasons.
What a disappointment I really enjoyed season 1 and was really looking forward to season 2. The show was special.
Such a refreshing change without all the hi tech of CSI. Believable characters tho some loose ends, eg why DI Bradfield strayed from is family etc. Overall, I was a fan!
Prime suspect Tennison was really good! What a shame. I’m hoping they can work something out.
This show was tremendous! Please re-think & give this program the life it deserves.
