TV shows The Flash and Gotham have been doing well this season. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for another DC Comics based series — Constantine. NBC has decided to shut down production after 13 episodes but it’s supposedly not cancelled and there could still be a second season.
Constantine revolves around the travels and work of John Constantine (Matt Ryan), an occult detective. He tries to help the innocent though his soul is already damned to hell. Others in the cast are Harold Perrineau, Charles Halford, and Angelica Celaya.
The supernatural series debuted on October 24th to a 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.28 million viewers. It was an okay start for a Fridays at 10pm series.
The numbers plunged about 30% in week two but that was Halloween so an above average decline was to be expected. The ratings rebounded a bit in week three and then dropped again in week four, falling to a 0.8 demo rating and 3.47 million. This past Friday’s numbers went back up again but the ratings are still pretty awful.
Deadline reports that production will be shut down after all 13 episodes of the first season have been produced. NBC isn’t ordering additional episodes at this time but it’s supposedly still in contention for a second season — for now, the optimism is based on last Friday’s increase and the DVR numbers.
Unless Constantine’s numbers continue to improve, it’s hard to believe that the network would put the time and money into producing and launching a second season. They’ve kept low-rated Hannibal around for three seasons (the show that will likely replace Constantine on the schedule in 2015) but only because it doesn’t cost them very much as a licensed show.
What do you think? Do you like Constantine? Do you think it should be cancelled or renewed for a second season? How do you watch? Live, DVR, on demand, or ?
Please don’t cancel this show. I’m not saying Grimm is a bad show, but Hannibal certainly is. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of the Manhunter/Hannibal Lector saga, but the T.V. Show is just awful. Now as far as Constantine is concerned, it really is a great show. I’m not just saying this as an objective viewer, I’m also saying this as a die hard comics fan. The Hellblazer series is pretty epic. I really like what DC has done with the Justice League Dark, and the justice NBC and DC Comics have done for this show is certainly… Read more »
I love “Constantine” on NBC! The occult subject matter is well researched. The actors craft the characters like true artist and it crosses the race and sex barriers. That makes for quality instead of quota filling dripple.
The only thing Constantine lacks is the superficiality that use to be the mainstay of American TV shows and a very safe bet on mindless programing for the networks. I say to TV executives, ” Stop making the lust for money prompt you to cancell quality shows.”
I love it. I dvr it because I work 3am to 12
I love this show. I wait for it everyweek. I love the lead actor and being a catholic, love all the storylines. Please keep it going. I cant stand Sitcoms. This is refreshing.
Its to bad that I do not live in the USA. Cause my views to shows like these aren’t shown in the programs ratings. I love supernatural shows, pretty much all of them. And I watch pretty much all of them. Sadly, channels can’t tell if their show is being recorded & watched at a later time, or heck, watched online.
The show might be a bit different from the original hellblazer / constantine, but seriously, why always cancel the supernatural stuff & continue on with scripted cop shows etc. Owh wait, ofc, they are cheaper -.-
I hope they don’t cancel this show. NBC is starting to act like Fox in its indiscriminate canceling of shows. I show like this one will draw a certain type of watcher who could be very interesting to advertisers. Also, maybe they need to do a Grimm-Constantine crossover to help with the ratings. Time to introduce Nick and the crew to demons and John Constantine to vesen beasts.
This is a great show. I really don’t want to see it go. Constantine is a great character. This is so much better than Hannibal.
Hi! Please do not cancel this show, it is a great one, and I really enjoy watching it!
This show is awesome, the comics are awesome, the character is awesome, and I think it has enough rating like to keep going. But I do think FOX or CW should hold the rights of Constantine instead of NBC.
Fox isn’t the type of channel you’d want to lay your faith in producing a supernatural TV series. CW or Syfy I could see picking up this show if NBC goes through with the cancellation but not Fox, as they would twist it around to be a religious right-wing nutcase on the part of John Constantine.
Please don’t put his show on FOX, they would destroy it, just like they did to Human Target, Firefly, The Chicago Code, etc. If it got on CW, an occasional crossover with Supernatural would be very interesting. It would be interesting to see how Sam and Dean would deal with the likes of John Constantine. On another note, I do with NBC would stick to the Hellbound comic motif of John Constantine and quit cow-towing to the “political correctness” (PC) crowd. In the comics, John Constantine always has a cigarette in his mouth. NBC should do the same. I am… Read more »
I hope this show survives, but unfortunately, I don’t think the show has enough original ideas. It’s a whole lot like Supernatural. When the characters pulled out a map that highlighted all the ‘demonic hotspots’ in the USA, I groaned. Just in the USA? What is with that country? So now we’re in a ‘Sam & Dean’ situation where the crew drives to a new location each week, stopping some supernatural evil force. They need to change that up somehow, find a new schtick. I hope it survives, though, as it potentially adds an interesting dimension to the TV DC… Read more »
I understand what you’re trying to say, but John Constantine and his storyline has been around since the 1980s.
True, so true! It’s got a long heritage, which is why I hope it lasts. But you have to admit, the show is not bringing much of a new twist to the TV supernatural genre. The Poppa Midnight character is great (always has been), so maybe bring him in more? Also, tying into the whole DC universe would be great – I wonder if that was in the long term plans? Dr. Fate? Swamp Thing?
Does anyone remember Brimstone? Another great (I’d say even more original) supernatural show that died a quick death. The writing and story were too clever.
its what ever, i like the movie but the show mmmmm……
So many of my fav shows get cancelled please don’t let this be one of them. I have even got my hubby watching and he hates these types of shows. It says something. Give it another chance.
I love this show!! Because of schedule I catch it in Hulu!! Lot of potential for plot development and character addition!
This is one of my favorite shows and needs to remain on air! I don’t even know what show “Hannibal” is.
I love this show – it’s my favorite new show this season. It definitely deserves a second season. I won’t be watching “Hannibal” if NBC ends “Constantine” after 13 episodes.
please please ! keep this show running I love it
