Last year, The CW aired three new scripted TV shows and cancelled two of them. How many will be cancelled or renewed during the 2017-18 season? Stay tuned.
There’s lots of data that network execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are the major ingredient. These charts will be updated daily, as new ratings data becomes available.
CW shows (so far): The 100, Arrow, Black Lightning, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Dynasty, The Flash, iZombie, Jane the Virgin, Life Sentence, Masters of Illusion, The Originals, The Outpost, Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Riverdale, Supergirl, Supernatural, Valor and Whose Line Is It Anyway?.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also view them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the ratings? Which shows should be doing better? Which one do you think will be cancelled next?
Wow so when it came to mid-season finale’s Supergirl, The Flash, and heck even Legends hit the mark, but Arrow and that cringefest wedding party , yeah i couldn’t continue. Not even a crossover event will get me to keep up with that show again…
Jane the Virgin used to be such a good show, but Jane became too holier than thou and it fell into the Felicity trap: triangle ended to settle on one guy and then they never returned to her and guy number too. Plus Anishka is super annoying and on way too much.
shes dead now dont think shell have anymore screentime
Nice to see Supergirl has moved past Supernatural in total viewers
I’m glad to see it in second place below The Flash. 🙂 Just wish all 4 DC shows were in the top 5.
I really hope valor gets renewed. I enjoy the characters and the plots and even some of the sub plots(female pilots prescription pill addiction. Here hoping i see more of this show and i hope said female chopper pilot gets the help she needs. Great teaching tool(addiction).
Valor has already been cancelled…
it hasnt though silly girl
Horrible ratings, no international Netflix deal, no back 7-9 order?
it’s canceled….
not necessarily?
It’s cancelled. I’m 98.17% sure.
So glad that Supergirl is doing great. It is no surprise that older people like it because storyline and the cast have depth and logic. Can’t wait to see what will happen with Samantha, Mon-El, Lena…
Supergirl is not doing great. It is the second worse show behind Jane the virgin in yr-yr change.
Supergirl is the second most watched show on the CW. Total viwers don’t count as much as 18-49, but they still count for syndication purposes. 18-49 is mostly used to set the ad rates.
I’ve always known that ratings determine how much money a show earns, so I’ll never understand the simple-mindedness of people who blame networks for cancelling a show and not the general audience for not watching it. Unless it’s NBC, with way higher standards than any other network, and rarely give chances. So anyway, I never really knew HOW it worked. A show’s first season ratings, do those ratings determine how much the show in the second season earns? Let’s say S02E01 gets 1.0, does it affect at all how much it earns, or is everything already set by season 1’s… Read more »
The PTB look at the show THIS SEASON, as it compares to other shows on it’s network. For all practical purposes it is tied for 3rd as far as ratings, and growing each episode in viewers. It is doing fine. It will get a 4th season, and as long as Melissa Benoist wants to play Supergirl it will be on the CW. Every single show dipped except for Riverdale (which had a special Netflix deal which has helped it immensely) and Supernatural….
They don’t look at year to year, they look at it in relation to the other shows on that network that year. ALL OF THE SHOWS, except for Supernatural and for a few episodes Riverdale have gone down from last season. Heck almost all shows from last season across the entire tv land had dropped from last season….that is the trend.
Supergirl is doing just fine, the series has been moving up in viewers each week, and has been steady at .5 which is above the renewal rate of the CW.
I think that this whole renewal/cancel thing is disrespectfull to the people who watch the shows. If you don’t know whether you will continue the show than finish it properly. Show some respect for your viewers!
But some people still hold grudges against the networks for some reason even if a show has ended, rather than got cancelled. They will THINK it got cancelled, then talk about how the network deserves to die and be boycotted. It’s strange, because if a show really was doing not well in ratings, how are they going to pay for the show? Do they expect the network to lose money just to appease them? If a network does do that to appease its audiences, then it might just be to build a good relationship with its viewers for its other… Read more »
You are absolutely right. I will always support network that ends the show it isn’t pleased with rather than the one who tries to prolong it with cliffhangers and than cancels it. To me that is dissrespectfull to the viewers and I believe that networks lose their total viewership by doing that. People will not spend their time and emotions on shows when chances are it is all for nothing, that they will just be dissapointed.
Great?? year to year drop is big time. Same as last year. At that rate next season will be its last.
I love Supernatural! Keep this show going, please! A 13-season show that holds its own against Thursday Night Football and Big Bang deserves respect, loyalty and most of all – renewal. There are still so many plot points we fans are waiting to see!
Supernatural has almost a unlimited plot selections from it a 2013 season it could explore . Really hope that actors and the network keeps it for years to come . It’s always on the top 3 as far as cw rating s go even after 13 seasons . The scooby episode was better than I thought it would be . Would like to see a flash cross over sometime though. Being now that the rift to other worlds they all have . Supergirl would be another great cross over 4 it 2
Looks like Supergirl might pass Supernatural in total viewers and become the second most watch CW show.
Called it
You mean the other way around right? Supergirl is already number 2 but falling fast and Supernatural is one of 3 shows that is gaining viewers. So if that continues, as it should, it will past Supergirl at some point.
Supernatural season 14 here we come! SPN is the best show on the network! Also S2 of Legends of Tomorrow was great.
The Flash should be renamed to We are flash, and by We I say Iris, I like the red in those ratings it seems I was not the only one seeing that this version of Flash got nothing to do with the Flash we grew up with, also the amount of bad writing combined with some PC/Feminism propaganda just made me skip/watch the last episode, I really don’t care about the feminist daughter that strips at the club for research she is like a secondary character which is the daughter of a romance interest of another secondary character. By this… Read more »
When she say, “We are the Flash” she meant that they are in it together. They are engaged about to be married. It seems like only children/teenagers don’t get what she meant. It’s like when people are apart of the military, police officers, firefighters etc…the person they end up with realize they have to carry the burden and risk with them. I mean it’s not that hard to understand. Comics have always been progressive, if you truly read them then you would have understood that. Comics have generally always been left leaning. It seems like me you haven’t been paying… Read more »
@Trac, I think you need to put on your glasses and hearing aids because it seems that you don’t watch the same show, I don’t remember Flash being such a ***** and wiped by Iris, also I don’t remember Barry being a total cuck, also if she loves him so much why she is the first one to put him in his place even when he is right, no sorry this version on Flash is just trashed by Iris, she became a very **** character and every-time I see her dialogs I just skip because it is a good waste… Read more »
Arrow and Riverdale are the best, the rest are for kids so cancel them please.
Actually Supergirl does better with older people than Arrow. That’s why Arrow is only one place above Supergirl in the 18-49 but Supergirl is 3rd in total viewers while Arrow is in 6th place.
Supernatural has been here since the beginning, and still stands to be in the top sharts. And tell me? what season are they in? Arrow I can understand since it’s been on for a while now, passed its 100 episodes mark if I’m not mistaken. However, Riverdale may be good (I’m not saying it’s bad, I watch it so…) but, they’re merely rookies who have yet to learn anything. Congrats on them. Theyre doing a really good job so far
Holy Crap ! Supernatural is still one of the leading shows and it’s also the oldest on the network that’s awesome
Supernatural, as Long as this series is on i will watch this channel. Season 13 Opening was brilliant 🙂
Watch Valor tonight (Monday 9pm EST). Nigél Thatch plays Col. Haskins. He is AMAZING!!!
It was, truly
Dynasty should be cancel
the same goes for Valor
They make too much money with Dynasty from Netflix to cancel it. It makes a profit before it even airs. Valor is a goner though.
Wow… So Riverdale is now the second highest rated show on the cw… What happened to Super girl
I never watched any CW show but did see Supergirl on cbs .it’s done for !!! Thanks to stupid writing team, producers and cw’s low budget
Then don’t think about season 2 and go straight to season the they cleaned up so go it’s like season 2 badly existed
Shippers wanted the show to fail just because two straight female characters, Kara and Lena, weren’t going to be together as a couple. You know, because CW was just discriminating against them and were bigots. Also, it supposedly worships men just because they dared to have any focus on Mon-El, and were shoving heterosexuality in their face.
That’s not why. Mon-El was easily the worst story line last season. It almost turned into the Mon-El show. He got more screen time than any of the other supporting characters that helped make the show good. People get mad at The Flash and say it’s the Iris show, when she has way less screen time than Mon-El. Also, I’m a lesbian and I don’t care if Kara and Lena get together or not. It isn’t realistic in my opinion. They are just best friends. Kara deserved better than Mon-El and I hate how she is moping about it. She… Read more »
Didn’t shippers get mad at Winn’s actor for joking that Lena and Kara weren’t going to end up together during the comic con you mentioned? Didn’t you say that was the reason why the audiences left the show? So is it because of the two not ending up together, or not, that the ratings fell? Of course, hetero relationships are everywhere, but considering this show’s audience type, and the prevalence of shippers like that everywhere on Tumblr and social media, it is definitely not unthinkable that they are jealous of Kara being with Mon-El, and may have contributed to the… Read more »
I believe people have had enough of the politicalization of the show. Not to mention the oversaturating of feminism as well as Lesbianism.
Arrow did this with Mr. Fantastic and ratings went down. As soon as they put his partner in less episodes ratings came back up.
The ratings fell when the show cut into action for Felicity and Arrow’s romantics. Again the ratings came back when they broke up.
The majority of people do not want to see romance they want to see you in action!
The supercorp problem in summer but over all people from other shows are coming since SG season 3 in probably the best out of all the dc shows right now
RIVERDALE NEEDS TO BE CANCELLED!!!!!
Its the second highest rated show so cancellation is highly unlikely.
Pretty much the only CW show in danger of cancellation is Valor.
Dynasty is also in danger. It keeps on dropping.
A full season has already been ordered and the Netflix deal makes it profitable and it’s produced by parent company CBS. It will almost definitely get a second season.
Dynasty is doing well with the International Netflix deal, they have a much better chance of being renewed. Valor is already gone…. bad ratings, not netflix deal, and no back order of episodes…..it’s gone.
Third highest.
You’re right, its now in third position
Yes let’s cancel our second highest rated and most buzzed about show. It’s the ShortBus Business model.
you are right Ted, it dropped to Third position .
I’m sure it drop a bit more to maybe 5th position, but that’s still good (for The CW).
