Extinct has gone the way of the woolly mammoth. BYUtv has cancelled its Extinct TV show after one season of ten episodes. In a refreshing turn of events, the non-profit network issued a statement acknowledging the Extinct cancellation, and didn’t try to reframe it as as a “limited event series” which was always intended to be a single season program.
A post-apocalyptic science fiction drama from creators Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston, Extinct stars Chad Michael Collins, Victoria Atkin, Jaclyn Hales, Yorke Fryer, Jack Depew, Matthew Bellows, and Jake Stormoen. The BYUtv series kicks off with aliens regenerating the human race, 400 years after its extinction. Now that they’re back, those who have returned embark upon quest to understand what is going on and why they are here.
Here’s the Extinct cancellation announcement, from BYUtv:
The BYUtv original scripted sci-fi series, Extinct, will not be renewed for a second season
Dear Extinct viewers,
Since the season finale in November, many of you have inquired about a second season of Extinct. This is a decision we have carefully considered since this breakout series launched earlier last year. As with any program or series on BYUtv, decisions like this are difficult, and never made without considerable analysis. After much discussion and debate, we have decided to not renew Extinct for a second season.
We recognize many of you will be disappointed to hear this. Like you, we understand the feelings when a beloved show is canceled. Unfortunately, the approval and cancelation cycle is part of the ebb and flow of any television network. But we wanted you to understand why we reached this decision. Unlike most networks who make renewal decisions based solely on audience size and the resulting financial impact of those ratings, we as a non-profit, cause-based network have the luxury of using broader, more qualitative data points. For example, we weigh the content and message of the series itself, its resonance with fans, its uniqueness in the TV landscape, and ultimately its ability to live up to our strategic aims as a content source that connects with families.
To be sure, Extinct was a bold experiment into this genre for BYUtv. And we were proud to bring this series to you. We’re grateful to our talented production partners on Extinct including GoFilms, Taleswapper, Orson Scott Card, and the remarkable cast and tireless crew of the series. Most of all, we appreciate you—the passionate fans of the show. While the Extinct chapter may be ending, the good news is that BYUtv is more committed than ever to producing unique, innovative, and purposeful stories that families can watch together.
Thank you again for your loyalty and trust as a viewer. And please stay tuned as we pledge to bring you even more world-class television for families in 2018 and beyond.
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Extinct TV series? Should BYUtv have cancelled or renewed Extinct for a second season. Sound off, in the comments.
I just finished watching the last 2 episodes of season 1 because I haven’t watched it in a while and after watching it and finding out that there will be no season 2 I was in dismay. I love this show and it was wrong of BYUTV to end it. Especially with an ending like that where Jax is still alive and the sparks bring someone back reborn as someone he knew. You can’t just end the last episode like that and then say that there won’t be a season 2. I say you do what you can to make… Read more »
I really wish they would have continued the series and conclud it similar to the book!
Bring back more from the author OSC.
We really loved the show and if your not going to renew for a second season give a 2 hour film that wraps up the cliffhanger
I have really enjoyed watching Extinct! I am greatly disappointed that Byutv is cancelling it. I get very tired of starting to watch difference series only to have it cancelled and leaving me hanging. Especially when they have a high viewing rate. Makes me just want to watch only movies. Why do so many TV series not give their audience atleast an ending.
I really am bummed about this! I am so going to miss this awesome show!
Such an intriguing show! We couldn’t stop watching it!!!! Great all the way around!!!! Please COME BACK!!!
Extinct was a great show and should have at least a conclusion, if not more seasons. Who are the people on that spacecraft? Are humans actually not extinct, but had ventured into space and this is one of their spaceships monitoring the earthling remakes/clones? Are they aliens? Are there other earthlings in other areas of the world?
Another series gone by the wayside which should’ve continued was Granite Flats.
It is so important to have intriguing shows with no worries of vulgarity (in regard to which other stations have become more and more unreliable).
Still waiting for the real explanation of why they reached the decision they did. What they tried to give was lame. The show was unique and different for BYUtv. It had a loyal following of viewers. If they at least do not attempt to add something to the sorry ending (real closure) then they should not expect loyalty in return.
Cancelling this show was a terrible mistake. The unique storyline and excellent acting held my interest unlike many other shows. I highly recommend a reconsideration.
Wow first Granite Flats now Extinct. I don’t know whose reading the numbers but they are crazy if they think re-runs of old movies beats these amazing shows. You exects really don’t know your audience do you. Too bad. You could have really broken out into a broader audience base than the Utah bubble. Too bad.
It was a bit hard to grasp if you did t start from The beginning. But I went back and caught up. Once up to speed I was hooked. I’m very disappointed to find it was not renewed for a second season. I hope some other network will pick it up. Sad!
I watched the series ,and enjoyed it very much. There are so many unanswered questions and hints demanding answers that I feel cheated. I feel that the cast is cheated, too. They worked hard to communicate with us every step of the way. It feels like a betrayal. I am 80 years old and will get over it easily, but what of the younger ones?
So disappointed! They cancel a quality, compelling show, but run a handful of movies over and over ad nauseum, and keep some of the cheesiest and most annoying shows going on forever.
Hey, BYUtv, stop acting like a city-specific, local station broadcasting its own clown shows before you become one again.
Please wrap up Extinct with a series finale or have the good sense to sell it to someone who will.
I loved the story line and saved all the episodes to me DVD! If no more episodes, please finish it or write the book so we can all have closure!
It’s always a sad day when the networks don’t recognize a good tv sci fi and cancel it. For some reason they usually think a good murder mystery or similar show is better. Really decent tv, especially science fiction, is hard to find.
