As viewers are no doubt aware by now, ABC has decided to cancel their Forever TV show after one season of 22 episodes. Series star Ioan Gruffudd took to Instagram to send a message to the show’s loyal viewers.
He wrote:
My dear friends, fans, supporters.
Tonight, as you all now know, I received a phone call that I was hoping not to receive, and to be honest I really wasn’t expecting it. I knew the numbers hadn’t been great, but I also knew the studio and the network both loved the show, and of course that it had an incredible fan base…so I thought we were in with a pretty good chance.
But sadly no, this time the cards weren’t dealt in our favor. Show business is like that. Hell, life is like that. You ride to the top of the wave and then you come crashing down again. I asked Alice to send out the sad news because I was a little bit shaken up and needed time to gather my thoughts.
So I sat down and started reading the thousands of Tweets in response to the announcement. And the more I read, the more I couldn’t believe it. The love, the sense of solidarity, the hope, the kindness, the support. Not just for the show, but for each other. And slowly I began to focus on what we had gained in the past year, rather than what we had lost in the last five minutes. I was overcome by a sense of gratitude. To have met you all and to have you all rooting for me and the show. At having a chance to play the role of my dreams, even if it was only for a year. To have been given the chance to bring Henry to life.
Watching the interaction of the FOREVER fans come together and share their love for the show has been breath-taking. It was you guys who held me up when I thought I could no longer go on. (Those days were LONG!) You made me smile when you pointed out the little things I did on screen that I thought had gone unnoticed. You gave me confidence when I accidentally found myself reading less than shining reviews. You were always with me, every step of the way, waving your flags, shouting your support for the show. It’s been an incredible, wonderful year, one that I will never, ever forget.
And guess what? The memories belong to us. We get to keep them ‘forever!’ Thanks again a million times for your unwavering support. Stay strong, be brave, and show kindness as often as you can!

What do you think? What do you think of Gruffudd’s message? Why do you think Forever has such a passionate viewership yet the ratings weren’t very good?
This is sad, this was a Great Show.. the problem with society and TV stations these days is that they want a higher percentage of viewers to be young, and they younger viewers are more likely going to just want to watch crap (jersey shore, honeybooboo, reality shows, and anything that is has a lot of sexual innuendo, since “sex sells”). AMC cancelled “Longmire”, it was a great show and had good ratings, but it had an older viewer demographic, not young and so they cancelled it. Allegiance on NBC, was a great new show and it was cancelled (although… Read more »
I am shocked! I very much enjoyed watching this show.
The cast did a very good job, I am very sad that I will never know how it turned out.
there was a chemistry there the worked for me.
I always looked forward to watching this when it was on. I can’t believe it won’t be on anymore. They should do something on YouTube to show us what happens between Henry and Jo.
Don’t give up on Forever! There must be another station or outlet to shop around and find a home for this Great Original Show with Terrific Cast! Please check out Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, along with TNT, USA, FX, A&E to name just a few! Don’t loose faith & #Save Forever!
Best show I had seen in a long time, very sorry to see it go, I was so looking forward to it every week, could they please change their mind 🙁
I loved the show. It was must see TV as far as I was concerned. The station should reconsider its decision considering how well The Age of Adeline is doing at the box office.
Typical of the mainstream TV. Shows that are purile and or poorly written last for years get an intelligent well thought out show like Life or Forever and they have no chance. I have no faith in Hollywood or the ignorant sycophantic industries that follow their suit. I hereby boycott all prevaiers of this typical crap ABC, NBC, and CBS in lieu of BBC. At least they can offer some intellectual television.
I am so sad to hear about this cancellation!! It was one of the best shows but it was buried
On a Tuesday night at 9 central!!! I am so upset!! It was quality programming!!
Do not do this!! It is one of your worst decisions!!
This is exactly why I don’t like to watch broadcast television. You get a quality show like Forever and it gets cancelled. Alternatively, they will only buy a subset of the season (6 episodes) and then want you to wait a year before continuing the show… only to find the writers are no longer available and the “next” season fundamentally changes. Here, we had a full season (22 episodes) of quality programming. I was so looking forward to next season. Well, I hope the cast and crew realize they did an excellent job and put together a great show. They… Read more »
I was shocked to hear that “Forever” was canceled. The actors and the chemistry between them was phenomenal; correlated with the character story line was refreshing, intriguing, and a pleasure to watch. I am so sorry to see them go and hope that ABC reconsiders this grand mistake. #Please Save Forever
If ABC doesn’t renew Forever. Lets hope Netflix picks it up.

The saddest thing about “Forever,” being cancelled is that it was one of those shows that was beautifully crafted with humor, suspense and awesome acting where a family could sit around the TV and watch together. I don’t know that ABC can be made to change their mind but there must be a network that is willing to take the show on. It was a fantastic show and ratings should not always matter. It would be nice if we could fight on to find a home for such a wonderful show.
I found his Ioan’s message very touching. Forever was truly entertaining and intriguing, I was looking forward to another season, with more story lines. Maybe Hulu will take it up (like what was done for the Mindy Project) I am a Fan and would surely tune in! Please bring it back.
So sad. Loved the show. Too bad it was on opposite an existing strong show, Person of Interest. They could have moved the show to Wednesday and got a great audience. Wednesday TV is so slow!
I too loved this show. Now I’ll never know if Henry tells Joe.
My family & I love this show… entire cast did an awesome job. Sorry to see it go.
