A staple of CBS’ Friday night schedule, ratings for Ghost Whisperer have dropped quite a bit over the season. Last week, the network surprised many viewers by cancelling the TV show after five seasons. The blow was softened when it was learned that the series might get a second chance on ABC. The alphabet network has now apparently passed.
Starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ghost Whisperer began in September 2005 and ran for 107 episodes. The series’ regular cast has also included David Conrad, Christoph Sanders, Jamie Kennedy, Camryn Manheim, Aisha Tyler, and Jay Mohr.
Things had been looking positive for the series to continue and some outlets actually had even reported that the show had been picked up. Unfortunately, the deal didn’t work out.
We may never know the details but Ghost Whisperer executive producers Kim Moses and Ian Sander issued a statement that said, “After five wonderful seasons and over 100 episodes, we are disappointed to announce Ghost Whisperer will not be returning for a sixth season. We’ve had an incredible experience and owe a debt of gratitude to everyone involved. We continue our relationship with ABC Studios and look forward to developing many more successful projects together in the future.”
While it looks like Heroes and Law & Order will get some closure, there’s been no word on any plans to go back into production and wrap up Ghost Whisperer.
What do you think? Sad to see it go? How would you have ended Melinda’s story?

This was a stupid idea of CBS. Ghost Whisperer was a great show with wonderful actors in it. The fact that they kept Medium shows that the powers that be have absolutely no taste what so ever. In my opinion, Patricia A. (star of the show) couldn’t act herself out of a wet paper bag. The first time I watched the show, I had to change the channel because of her acting or lack of ability. HORRIBLE!!!!
Canceling ghost whisperer is a horrible idea, this show brought my family together, and now its gone????? They should un-cancel it, it already broke the hearts of everyone at my school when they changed the ghost whisperer TV guide schedule on ion television, making us miss most the episodes, but now canceled on the other channels we can watch it, why ruin our lives more by canceling it?
Bad call….. GW was one of the very few CBS shows worth watching. I was hoping against hope that ABC might utilize a brain cell or two and pick it up. Alas. The networks should really put me on retainer….Let me preview all the new shows……If i like it, they can cancel it before they bother investing any more production dollars. I seem to have an unnatural talent for enjoying doomed shows. Well……..sh*t. Goodbye Ghost Whisperer…….Many of us will miss you. Typical that no one gives a single d*mn about the viewers that supported the show for half a decade… Read more »
I can’t believe that Ghost Whisperer has been cancelled!!!! It was one of the few good shows left on TV!!! I am very disappointed with CBS on this one.
No need for a wrap up show – between Damian (the kid – he just reminds me of the movie Damien) and Jim dying and being a different actor and now back to this one and Jamie Kennedy ruining the show…I loved it in the beginning but it jumped the shark tank last year.
@Rhea: I love it… that’s a great idea for a variation on the ABC reality show, “Jump the Shark Tank.”
I agree!!!!
cbs pulled a dumb move cancelling the ghost whisperer.i looked foward to friday nights at 8,i think it lost so many ratings it got away from the true meaning of the show. her helping people move on to heaven. her having visions, the shadows and all that was a little over the top.
I watched tv one day a week that was to watch Ghost whisperers. I hope this show comes out on dvd . Sorry to see it go.
They should have tried switching it to Wednesday nights. Noone stays home on Fridays to watch television that late. I love the show so much I have it recorded. This is a huge loss for CBS and television altogether. I really hope someone else picks it up so they can finish the show out and not leave us hanging. Their fans deserve to see it play out and not just end it with no conclusion.
WAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! You are taking away a great Friday night show! What a refreshing alternative to crime drama shows. I am so sad! Dumb dumb dumb for dropping Ghost Whiserer CBS – AND same to you ABC for not picking up!
What a load of crap. What the hell?? Access denied. You guys suck!
Although I am sad to see GW go, there is no need for a special episode. I don’t know if JLH saw the handwriting on the wall, or not, but the last episode of this season wrapped up the storylines that they had been doing and you can assume they live happily ever after. And since it deals with ghosts, happily ever afterLife.
I’ll miss The Ghost Whisperer. It’s very entertaining whether you think it’s believable or not. I looked forward to the show, it ended my week. There are many other shows that seem to stay on year after year & they are not good shows.
Wondering is Jennifer’s talk of vjazzling all over town stopped some viewers. I loved the show, but she portrayed such a family oriented ghost helping mother. Just curious.
You sorta do have to consider why ratings are bad on Friday, it’s all but understandable. In fact, at about 8 million (if not more), CBS is lucky. Now, they’ve got really no purpose for Fridays.
P.S i’m not even a GW fan.
CBS dropping Ghost Whisperer is the dumbest idea they’ve had in years especially when you consider it was the ONLY reason CBS would win Friday nights! ABC is dropping the ball by not picking it up asd\ they would finally have a show worth watching. Ghost Whisperer is one of the best written and performed shows on TV in many years and a wonderful alternative to the crime drama and reality TV game show crap the networks are spewing on the viewing audience today. I only hope that somebody gets smart and picks up this wonderful show with a huge… Read more »
I agree completely!!! Why wont people get smat, ghost whisperer is the best show on TV, and now there canceling it???
