At the Television Critics Association press tour, Amazon Studios boss Roy Price touched on why the streaming service didn’t pick up Hannibal for a fourth season.
TVInsider reports that Price indictated that Amazon isn’t interested in “solid, good-ish shows” because they need shows that can become distinctively identified as “signature” Amazon shows — not series that coudn’t make it on traditional television. “In an on-demand world, that show doesn’t demand it,” Price said.
Price said that the decision to not move forward with more Hannibal wasn’t based on a creative reason. Amazon’s head of drama, Morgan Wandell, also confirmed that creator Bryan Fuller wouldn’t have been able to give any attention to a fourth season for at least a year because of his other projects.
Amazon’s head of comedy, Joe Lewis, noted, “None of us are up here to make someone’s third favorite show on a specific night of the week.”
What do you think? Do you agree with Amazon’s point-of-view? Would you have followed Hannibal to Amazon, even if you had to wait more than a year?
It is the highlight of my week. I would rather wait and have something to look forward to. Life without Hannibal will be tough to endure. .Whitechapel is another big miss and I felt far superior than Ripper street!! Do mot let us loose another television gem!!
Amazon has made a huge mistake when they passed on this exquisitely made show. So what ,if Fuller couldn’t devote time NOW? I can wait. I waited for films promised but not delivered till later, I’ve waited for Doctor Who to resume two years later!
I would have joined Prime, also, just to see Hannibal. Tsk Tsk, NBC and Amazon.
if they think so low of the show, why not sell the streaming rights to netflix?
Everyone is bitching out Amazon for not picking it up…how about EVERY other network that passed on it without even giving it any consideration?
Being a Prime member is much more than streaming.. it’s all the music, books, shipping, and other benefits Prime members get… The video streaming is a bonus… Not too shocked they passed if the producer wasn’t going to be able to work on it for a while…
I love this show. I would love to see Showtime or HBO pick it up. I cancelled my Amazon for a reason.
This is the vest and most artistic show on TV. It is a masterpiece and should continue. No other show on TV (free), cable or streaming is like like it. The reasons for Amazon not picking it up are contradictory in themselves.
I would have def. signed up for prime or whatever I would of had to get to watch more hannibal. Super disapointed, does anyone know if there’s a crowd funding thing going ot happen for it? Id donate 50 dollars to it atleast and Im a broke college student lol
Actually guys…why hasnt anyone thought of HBO? Hannibal for HBO! The show would be even better…
Wow, not only is that rude, it’s completely nonsensical. No wonder Amazon can’t compete with Netflix.
I am not a fan of Hannibal but I will comment on Amazon’s policy of only pursuing “signature Amazon shows” and letting good shows that couldn’t make it on traditional TV die. I am an Amazon customer of 12 years who supplies them with constant business and I am also on Prime, but there is no comparison between Amazon and Netflix when it comes to streaming, and Roy Price’s comments show me that this will not change any time soon. I have had constant problems trying to stream Amazon programs and movies while Netflix is like a dream come true.… Read more »
I would have definitely got Prime for Hannibal- it’s a brilliant show and Amazon have really missed out on a good opportunity here. As for waiting… have they seen how many people wait 2 years for 3 episodes of Sherlock?
Agreed. Would have paid for Prime for this show and wouldn’t mind waiting. They really dropped the ball, a bunch of idiots. I hope they read this and realize just how sucky their decision was.
I would have bought a prime subscription just for this show. its a shame that NBC canceled such a well done show. I would gladly wait a year. I waited for spartacus seasons.
So Amazon wil produce original shows that could never make it on traditional TV either.
Gotcha.
A VERY good point. lol
Amazon missed the boat. I’ll stick with Netflix. Amazon doesn’t offer anything for me. Hannibal could have made a difference.
