At the Television Critics Association press tour, Amazon Studios boss Roy Price touched on why the streaming service didn’t pick up Hannibal for a fourth season.
TVInsider reports that Price indictated that Amazon isn’t interested in “solid, good-ish shows” because they need shows that can become distinctively identified as “signature” Amazon shows — not series that coudn’t make it on traditional television. “In an on-demand world, that show doesn’t demand it,” Price said.
Price said that the decision to not move forward with more Hannibal wasn’t based on a creative reason. Amazon’s head of drama, Morgan Wandell, also confirmed that creator Bryan Fuller wouldn’t have been able to give any attention to a fourth season for at least a year because of his other projects.
Amazon’s head of comedy, Joe Lewis, noted, “None of us are up here to make someone’s third favorite show on a specific night of the week.”
What do you think? Do you agree with Amazon’s point-of-view? Would you have followed Hannibal to Amazon, even if you had to wait more than a year?

Fantastic series! I don’t agree with the characterization of this being a “solid good-ish” show at all. As a fan, I would be willing to wait until Fuller can devote his time to Season 4. I think most fans would be willing to do this. Please Amazon – reconsider!
I think this was the best thriller show on network television I have been alive to watch. Whoever made this decision at NBC a didn’t realize the possibilities Hannibal offered. I’m sure most viewers would have wAited a year for another season and maybe Amazon and Netflix should realize that too. You have idiots at CBS relieving Under the Dome and Halle berry in Extant and NBC a won’t give Hannibal’s amazing cast to make it. Whoever programmed it was an idiot and put it on Thursday against a lot of other shows. Then they move it to Saturday when… Read more »
The absolute best show I’ve ever seen on TV! Crazy about both Mads & Hugh! Something with more “meat” to it! Hopefully a forward thinking company will pick it up and continue the “dinner party”!
It was my understanding that there were several more plot lines and story arcs, enough to span at least six more seasons on the drawing board for this show. Each season would be pulling characters from the different Harris novels and all involving Lecter. OF COURSE we would have waited.
