Though Harry’s Law was the most-watched scripted TV show on NBC this season, the network cancelled it. As I’ve suggested in the past, advertisers favor shows that attract those in the 18-49 demographic. Though Harry’s Law had a lot of viewers, the legal series had some of the lowest demographic numbers on the network.
When asked why Kathy Bates and company had been let go, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said, “It was a difficult decision. Everyone here respects Harry’s Law a lot but we were finding it hard to grow the audience for it. Its audience skewed very old. It’s hard to monetize that.”
Bates broke the news of the show’s cancellation over the weekend. She wrote to fans, “Sad news today. Harry’s Law will not be renewed for a 3rd season. We are all terribly sad. Many thanks for all your support.”

The actress later noted, “Waiting for this verdict was tough. We wrapped a month ago so it was a very long wait!”
Bates reconciled, “Tough day getting used to the idea of no more Harry. Think I’ll keep her with me 4ever.”
When asked if there was a possibility that Harry’s Law might move to cable, Bates responded, “No hope.” But, responding to an inquiry last night on the subject, Bates wrote, “Not sure, but don’t think so.”
Justine Lupe, who played Phoebe Blake, wrote, “Sad day. Little bit of heartbreak. What a gift to had had this time.”
Actress Karen Olivo, who joined the cast in season two as Cassie Reynolds, responded with a message to her castmates, “It was an honor, my friends!”
Nathan Corddry, who’d been playing Adam Branch since the show began, noted, “I’d thank everyone individually, but the list is too long.Never was happier professionally. Thank you for a wondrful 2 years. #tough2swallow”
What do you think? Are you going to miss Harry’s Law as much as the cast will? If the show did move to another channel, would you follow it?
What a shame! I looked forward to it all week. It was one of the few shows that was worth watching. I am so sick of those “reality” shows. Yes, I absolutely would follow it to another network. Does NBC not realize where those 18 to 49 year olds are getting their money? From the parents who are once again providing them with food and shelter in these hard economic times. We are the ones who actually HAVE some money to spend.
Absolutely broken hearted… I’m in that demographic… I’m 37 and have NEVER missed an episode nor have my friends… I LOVE Kathy Bates and I really hope another Network picks it up. These networks have really dropped the ball this year with some really great shows. 🙁 Hope they find a place somewhere for “Harry” soon! I absolutely Love her! She’s is like no other!!!
.
Not to be believed — dumping a first class, mature, meaningful production, “Harry’s Law”, for four more inane sitcoms. Does NBC’s demographics really tell it that the dull-brained,
broke and generally penny-less young adults (who still think like kids ) are more important to advertisers that grown-ups with smarts and buying power? I will still watch NBC for Pro Golf or an NFL game, but that’s it. USA has become the home for good, new programming, how about a transfer there?
I’m 29 and my husband is 30. One of our favorite shows and we were hooked from the beginning. So sad to see it go and frustrated that though it was highly rated it’s demographic is “too old.” I would definitely followHarry on another network.
i can’t believe they cancelled this show… i am so disappointed and i am in the age group they don’t have enough of! sooo hoping cable picks up the show!
I love Harry’s Law! I would definately follow it wherever it ended up. I am 39 and look forward to it each week. Please leave Harry’s Law on the air.
I would follow Harry’s Law to another station.
Ford appreciates the fact that I bought a brand new Ford Focus and they could care less that I am not in NBC’s demographic.
Keep in mind that it is 53% of recent college grads that are unemployed or under-employed and have had to move back home with their parents.
I am devastated. Absolutely love Harry’s Law and Kathy Bates is great in the show. I would definitely follow the show to another network … and I hope another network will see the value of picking up this show. Well, this is NBC’s loss … I’m done with that network. Whenever they have a winning show, with good viewship, they get rid of it and put another senseless comedy on. I’m tired of networks treating those of us in the older generation as though we don’t count … hopefully one of the cable channels will pick this fantastic show up.
With all the real crap on TV they pick a class show to cancel? NBC is loosing another viewer hour.
I would certainly follow Harry to another station…as would my 24 year old daughter!
I simply cannot believe you’d cancel such a wonderful show!!!! Heaven forbid there should be actual people who are actors and can act!!?? No, you’d rather have stupid reality shows for the kids! NBC you SUCK! Some other network please please please pick it up!
I’d absolutely follow it to another network. It’s an excellent, intelligent and heart-warming show. And yes, I am over 49, but so what? I spend just as much or more than those who are under. This discrimination in advertising makes absolutely no sense.
Yes, my husband and I would watch this show if it was picked up by another network. The show is wonderful. What those folks at NBC don’t understand is that the older generation learned from their “Depression and Post Depression Era parents, to be be frugal. We are now in our retirement years with good incomes, because we made wise choices with our finances. Yes NBC, we do have money to spend. It looks like you just made a bad decision.
A line from the movie Pretty Woman, comes to mind… ” big mistake…HUGE!!
SUCH A SHAME ! NBC HAS SUCH POOR RATINGS ..THIS BEING A REASON…THEY DO NOT KNOW A GREAT SHOW ..
THEY KEEP THE JUNK AND THROW AWAY THE WONDERFULL!!
COME ON TNT OR FX..SHOW THEM HOW IT IS DONE!
We would follow this show on another network. It’s a shame, because it is a great show. What the people at NBC don’t realize about the older generation, is that we are the ones who have the money, because we learned from our “Depression Era” parents to be frugal!! We make very good consumers! Hopefully one of the cable channels will pick this wonderful show up next fall. We will be watching for it.
