Though Harry’s Law was the most-watched scripted TV show on NBC this season, the network cancelled it. As I’ve suggested in the past, advertisers favor shows that attract those in the 18-49 demographic. Though Harry’s Law had a lot of viewers, the legal series had some of the lowest demographic numbers on the network.
When asked why Kathy Bates and company had been let go, NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said, “It was a difficult decision. Everyone here respects Harry’s Law a lot but we were finding it hard to grow the audience for it. Its audience skewed very old. It’s hard to monetize that.”
Bates broke the news of the show’s cancellation over the weekend. She wrote to fans, “Sad news today. Harry’s Law will not be renewed for a 3rd season. We are all terribly sad. Many thanks for all your support.”

The actress later noted, “Waiting for this verdict was tough. We wrapped a month ago so it was a very long wait!”
Bates reconciled, “Tough day getting used to the idea of no more Harry. Think I’ll keep her with me 4ever.”
When asked if there was a possibility that Harry’s Law might move to cable, Bates responded, “No hope.” But, responding to an inquiry last night on the subject, Bates wrote, “Not sure, but don’t think so.”
Justine Lupe, who played Phoebe Blake, wrote, “Sad day. Little bit of heartbreak. What a gift to had had this time.”
Actress Karen Olivo, who joined the cast in season two as Cassie Reynolds, responded with a message to her castmates, “It was an honor, my friends!”
Nathan Corddry, who’d been playing Adam Branch since the show began, noted, “I’d thank everyone individually, but the list is too long.Never was happier professionally. Thank you for a wondrful 2 years. #tough2swallow”
What do you think? Are you going to miss Harry’s Law as much as the cast will? If the show did move to another channel, would you follow it?
This is a great show and I’d watch if on any network.
Great show, great cast, great writing, and people of all ages watched it. I hope it goes to cable.
Great show! We’d watch on cable. Of course, we are over 49, so we don’t count.
Best show ever. Hope cable realizes the worth of this show. Harry’s Law is great in all aspects.
I’d follow this show ANYWHERE!!!
Just don’t let it die!!!
Very disappointed that the network decided to cancel this show. Harry’s Law is a breath of fresh air in TV today. It is thought-provoking, and always included timely subject matter. As we suspected—it is a show that requires some attention and thought, and unfortunately the great American viewing public can’t sustain more than 3 seconds’ thought at a time. Hence the plethora of “reality” television. Hope that we can either resurrect Harry’s Law or that something similar gets produced. Long live the cast, especially Kathy Bates, one of our favourite performers.
my taste in programming is not “old” and the money i spend on what i believe in is virtually ageless. it would be exceptionally foolish for sponsors to ignore the fiscally vigorous members of their audience. BRING BACK “HARRY’S LAW”! altogether, now; BRING BACK “HARRY’S LAW”! are you listening nbc? cable stations? there IS an audience out here for tripe-free programming. let the sellers take notice…
I do hope a cable network picks up Harry. My husband and I watched every episode. Certainly better than all the reality shows and blood and gore. Don’t discount us “Old Foggies” We purchase products too! My thanks to Kathy and all the cast for some good viewing time.
My wife and I loved this show, but both being born in 1954 we are too old for the advertisers. They seem to forget that most of us have a greater income than those 18 -40.
Love to see this show on USA or other cable channel.
My husband I also loved Harry’s Law ane picked up by d are seriously disappointed about the cancellation. We are also in the age group with more disposable income, who are unappreciated by the television networks. We hope that either NBC will have a change of heart or it will by a cable or satellite network.
Best show ever!
Are you crazy???
Too damn bad that such an excellent show with a wonderful cast, great scripts and a following of we “old farts” should bite the dust because we don’t fit into a certain demographic number. However, we retirees are quickly becoming the majority plus we do have a great deal of purchasing power. Anyone advertising on this program should consider this. I certainly hope that a cable company picks it up. I personally know a few dozen viewers that would gladly follow it wherever it goes.
BIG MISTAKE!!! This is a wonderful show….very refreshing to see a real drama about the law rather than all that CRAP and “Reality TV” garbage that’s on the air now!! Unbelievable that the “powers that be” at NBC are all so ignorant that they don’t realize they have a hit show! I certainly hope they reconsider or, in the alternative, I hope this show gets picked up by Cable …I’ll watch (and so will millions of others) no matter where it’s aired!!
Keeping my hopes up!
DON’T THE FOLKS OVER 50 COUNT ANYMORE? A SHOW WITHOUT EXCESS VIOLENCE AND SEX IS CONCELLED? WE WOULD RUSH OUT FROM DINING OUT TO GET HOME IN TIME FOR HARRY’S LAW. PLEASE NBC, RECONSIDER.
I’m with you on this!! Maybe we could get a petition started to bring Harry’s Law back?? Oh wait…I forgot – no one at NBC KNOWS HOW TO READ!!!!!! Silly me!
Baby Boomers probably watch the ‘old’ major stations more than th age demographic that NBC wants to pitch to with advertisers at the highest costs, but they are losing viewers every day to cable shows. Baby Boomers usually have high spending powers, maybe they are marketing to the wrong age demographic. I thought the first season started off too silly & maybe they have gone too far with the changes for some, but the quality is still good – better than a lot of network TV these days.
“O” could pick up Harry. PLEASE
I can’t believe NBC cancelled this show. They keep totally stupid sitcoms year after year and cancel an intelligent show that visits timely issues that are relevant to everyone. We are really going to miss Harry and crew
