Well, there’s one dangerous situation that Christopher Chance can’t escape. FOX has cancelled Human Target after two seasons on the air. No season three.
Human Target follows a private bodyguard and security expert (Mark Valley) who protects his clients by integrating himself into their lives and becaomes a “human target.” He’s aided by his business partner, Winston (Chi McBride), and a tech genius named Guerrero (Jackie Earle Haley). In the second season, a former client (Indira Varma) becomes his benefactor and an expert thief (Janet Montgomery) joins the team to seek redemption.
The series debuted back in January 2010 to a positive 2.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.12 million total viewers. Subsequent episodes had some solid numbers (thanks in large part to American Idol) but the latter part of the season really declined. The season finale brought in a mere 1.9 rating and season one averaged a 2.9 rating and 9.6 million viewers.
The show was on the bubble for renewal last May but FOX ultimately decided to give the series a second chance to get better ratings. That didn’t pan out.

Last November, season two of Human Target debuted to a week 1.8 rating in the demo and 6.59 million viewers. The network kept it on through the holidays, the ratings got worse, and by January it seemed like they’d given up on the series. The final episodes of the season performed a bit better but, again, thanks to being teamed American Idol. Season two averaged a 1.7 demo rating and 6.4 million viewers.
As one of the network’s lowest scripted series of the season, it seemed like just a matter of time before FOX would cancel Human Target. Last night, they officially did. Despite some devout fans, Human Target just wasn’t a winner in the ratings. After 25 episodes, the show is over.
What do you think? Should Human Target have been renewed for season three? Why didn’t more people watch the TV series?

My thanks to Mark, Chi & Jackie. You guys were great. Show done in by the women. Even so, I think the show will be a cult favorite. Long live Guerrero!
Ah man, I’m going to miss this show. It started out as a “I’ll watch the first episode and then cut it out of my already crowded schedule” but it was so good, as something my father and I could both enjoy, that I kept it. It did seem like they were phoning it in for the last few episodes though; perhaps they could sense they were going to get canceled. Still, a fun series, shouldn’t have been canceled (and let’s hope they don’t put some “who can lose weight the fastest!” reality show in its place).
I have really enjoyed the Human Target show. I agree that if FOX had aired it on a regular schedule it would have been a success. I refuse to watch the reality shows that are on TV. So Fox has lost a viewer!!! (Not that they really give a care)
[…] Human Target (FOX) NEW Christopher Chance has survived all kinds of dangerous situations but couldn’t survive the ratings game. The action TV series has been cancelled after two seasons. […]
[…] TV show dates: January 17, 2010 – February 9, 2011 Series status: Cancelled […]
WTF ever! F**K YOU FOX!!
I personally think the writers got really sloppy with season 2, because season 1 was amazing. Its a shame they couldnt keep the momentum going.
Loved the first season despite it being a bit uneven. Bringing in Matt Miller to “Chuck-ify” the series was a mistake. Not only did the show move further and further away from its premise, but a lot of loose ends from Season 1 were never mentioned again (the Old Man, Katherine Walters, etc.). Dumping composer Bear McCreary to make way for Tim Jones (a Chuck alum, big surprise there) and his love of pop music didn’t help either.
Although I am shocked to learn that they cancelled this show, I am not surprised. It makes sense in a world where the attention span of most people lasts about 10 minutes. Lets face it, you needed a brain to watch Human Target and thats what killed it. If its not a “reality tv” drama or some competition with a snappy beat, any show with substance will be canned. Watch and see what crap Fox uses to replace it…perhaps another singing show???
WAH.
Well, Fox kept bumping this show for stupid crap like American Idol. They never kept is scheduled on a consistent basis. I wish all the lemmings that follow American Idol would jump off a cliff. Maybe then Fox will try to keep decent shows. Fox only cares about the teenager demographic. Too bad.
hope another network picks up a third season…the CW likes leftovers…plus they could pair it with Nikita.
I really like that idea! They could even do crossovers between the two shows. Can you imagine Nikita helping Chance out on a case? Heck, yeah.
Dislike Dislike Dislike!! Fox you SUCK!!!!!
The show had a lot of promise when it started, but the stories were very uneven and it seems they got away from the show’s original concept for the Chance character. The addition of the two new cast members in Season 2 also diluted the show; while I liked Indira Varma, there was no point to her or (especially) Janet Montgomery’s characters. It’s a shame, since TV could use a good action/adventure series and the series was hurt by the change in showrunner between seasons 1 and 2, but there was no point to renewing it.
I think if FOX had given it half a chance, with decent (or just consistent) scheduling, it might well have kept the numbers. I absolutely loved the show, and I’m gutted it’s been cancelled. I have a slight delusional hope Warner Brothers might be smart enough to shop it to another network who will give it the real chance is deserves. I also hope they go back to the darker, more Bourne/Bond styling of season 1. And as much as I like Miller, and some of the changes he made… not all of them worked. He seemed smart and determined… Read more »
