It looks like the doctor is out — for now. HBO has cancelled In Treatment after three seasons on the air. However, the cable channel may be interested in keeping the series going in another form.
Starring Gabriel Byrne as Dr. Paul Weston, In Treatment first aired in January 2008 and ran five nights a week. That didn’t perform as well as expected so it was reduced to two episodes twice a week for seasons two and three. While In Treatment has been a favorite with some critics, the ratings haven’t kept up. The season three finale, which aired in December, attracted just 253,000 viewers.
Byrne noted that the role was quite demanding in that it required him to memorize large amounts of dialogue in a short amount of time. He was nominated for two Emmy Awards and appeared in all 121 episodes of the series. Dianne Wiest won a supporting actress Emmy and Glynn Turman won in the guest actor category. In 2009, In Treatment won the WGA Award for best new series.
Though In Treatment may be done as a regular series, HBO is interested in a new incarnation. A statement from HBO states, “It’s true that we have no plans to continue with In Treatment as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”
What do you think? Are you sorry that there won’t be a fourth season of In Treatment? Would you like to see it continue in another form?

PERFECT Timing. The world needs THERAPY and this series is therapeutic. I just found it. WELCOME BACK. I’m starting with Season 1. Playing Catch-Up is fun with this scripted sum.
My husband and I just started watching the series and we are addicted to it.
HBO please bring this series back to life !
I love it
Both my husband and I have been hooked on it. Now that we finished season 3 we are having withdrawals we need to discuss with Dr. Paul…
I would love to watch another season of In Treatment
By very far the best drama series on HBO max!
I was not yet past episode 20 of the first season when I made the decision to rewatch the entire series once I finished it.
Please reconsider!
I loved this seried, when I finished series 3, I immediately looked up to see when the next was due and was very disappointed to read it was being cancelled. Most new series are just violence and horror this is real life. Please reconsider
Of the numerous shows that are reviewed for cancellation, this cannot be one of your best choices. The intricate patterns the revolving patients weave as Gabriel Byrne travels the many convoluted pathways of each patient tells in clear message why this man is called “Doctor.” You are doing many watchers of your series an understated disservice. Reconsider.
I love this series and want more so when I asked about a season 4 I was very disappointed. I hope it continues in a different format. I’m hooked.
Im devastated! This is one of the best TV shows I have ever watched….twice! The dialogue, the screen shots, the realness! Byrne holds every scene and it’s impossible not to get attached to his character! This needs to continue guys, it different to all the tosh that is on the tv these days! Please continue!!!!
I am disappointed
I Loved Loved the Series, genuine and orignal. Please bring it Back To Life!
I just found about the series and not after 15 episodes I m so into it. I have such strong ambition and desire to watch more and more episodes. Gabriel performance is incredible and the whole story placing in his room where is known to be the safest place in the world for his patients, has got me incredibly into it. I’m so disapointed to hear that there is onpy three seasons and have already gotten depressed. It’s a shame we cant have more of such powerful series. I review the episodes and each time I find something new about… Read more »
I only discovered “In Treatment” recently after joining the modern world in streaming Prime shows. (Who knew my Prime membership included such benefits?) I admit I was instantly addicted to the compelling lives of the patients and the psychologist. The three seasons went by quickly, and I felt a bit lost after the show ended! In my opinion, the series begs for another season!! Please consider you’ve left us wondering what’s going to happen to the characters. And for those of us who deal with enough grief daily, I plea, please give us closure!
Yes, loved the series – loved the scene of a simple room and the difficulty of a therapist working with whatever Individual drama can unfold in front of him. I think the format could be different- I watched it on catch up, watching a few stories at a time. Also loved the scene with Gina at the end of his difficult week, and how her character could completely challenge perspectives.
I just came across the series on Prime and does through all three seasons. Sad there are not more. It is a great series. I got sucked in quickly to each clients story. I loved that both sides of the thereputic relationship are explored in depth with realistic psychotherapy language and considerations.
Best series ever. Gabriel was mesmerizing!!!I was so disappointed when it ended. I tell people about it but unfortunately most have never heard of it. With all the crap that’s on tv this was such a gift.
