Mike & Molly will end its run on CBS during the second half of this television season. With a 13-episode order for season six, fans will not see a seventh season.
Fans were shocked by the news of the comedy’s cancellation. The show is a fan favorite, but there are new details about the reasons behind Mike & Molly’s quick cancellation before the series even premieres season six on CBS.
Ken Levine, a veteran sitcom writer, went to his blog to share his thoughts on the cancellation of Mike & Molly recently, and he laid the facts of the situation out on the virtual television table.
He said:
MIKE & MOLLY has performed reasonably well wherever CBS has put it. And its star, Melissa McCarthy has become a legitimate movie star. You would think for that reason alone CBS would be thrilled. They’ve captured lightening in a bottle. And yet, in fairness, it’s not like McCarthy’s rise to stardom has kicked MIKE & MOLLY to a new level of popularity. It hasn’t. Neither did THE OFFICE’S ratings suddenly skyrocket when Steve Carell got hot in films.
A big consideration is economics, especially in MIKE & MOLLY’S case. Everyone initially signs a six-year deal. The six years will be up this season. This is when having a movie star as your lead becomes not such a good thing. License fees (how much the network will pay for each episode) are usually determined in advance and then putting together your cast and production crew is like an NBA franchise building a team under the salary cap. Sometimes the costs are just too prohibitive.
And still another factor – MIKE & MOLLY is not owned by CBS. It’s a Warner Brothers show. CBS has nothing to gain longterm by MIKE & MOLLY’S success. So it’s now the ugly stepchild with a foot missing.
Fans of Mike & Molly and the cast were definitely surprised by CBS pulling the plug on this series. Would you want to see this show find new life on another network? Tell us what you think.
Like I’ve said b4… I really think the best characters on this show are Vince, Mike’s mom & her dog & the guy who owns the restaurant! I got tired of nasty Molly a couple of seasons ago…
One season they moved to the basement, another season they were trying to have a baby… and both of those seemed to just disappear. And not getting her sister off weed/drugs was just ridiculous! So to be honest I won’t miss this show… it has stopped being funny.
my favorite show…yes definitely I hope it finds a new home
Luckily we have one more season to watch the brilliance of this cast together! It’s sooo surprising because it’s sooo damn good…I like “other” shows but could really care less about, for instance, a horse living on a balcony..ahem! It wouldn’t be great if Molly had a best-seller, because it be like Roseanne winning the lottery…so WHERE could the show go, realistically?
What an amazing supporting cast…Reno especially…let’s hope we see these others on TV again
Please find Mike and Molly a new home! And please bring out season 5 DVD in Australia.
ONE OF THE BEST COMEDIES FOR ALONGTIME ALWAYS FUNNY ALWAYS HEARTFELT WILLL BE MISSED GREATLY
Yes go to an other network.
About the subject of “Mike & Molly” not being owned by CBS: I thought one bad thing about being “owned” by CBS (that is, produced by CBS’s in-house studio) is that CBS’s home-entertainment subsidiary tends to always omit the season numbers on the DVD sets of their shows’ last seasons on the air, so their titles will simply say “The Final Season”, and nothing else. No season number on the front, spine, nothing. Even the original “CSI” (which ran FIFTEEN seasons) was not immune to this. I think CBS sucks, and their home entertainment division sucks for this (the final-season-number… Read more »
Love M&M — anything with Chuck Lorre’s name on it proves to be superb. Hope to see it picked up elsewhere!

You can kick back and have a laugh
And laughing in this world is just what we need … We don’t need more bad, dark stories …
Laughing is the best medicine and this is I would say one of the time we need it most
This is just how I feel so to be totally honest I need the fuuny! With the way the World is laughter is a Much Needed Commodity!.. I currently surf channels looking for repeats of Mike and Molly. I would follow this show even to HBO OR NETFLEX!!!!! I don’t care where just bring it back for those of us who lLove the Show and Love to Laugh!!❤ Please
Somebody keep Mike and Molly on TV. The reality shows that are overtaking our channels are boring. Therefore, go listen to music. The writers are fantastic, the actors, all of them are naturals and you get a good belly laugh throughout the show. Please keep it, We finally got a mirror image of “I love Lucy’, back on TV, and some idiot wants to cancel it. WHAT? I say if CBS cancels the show, NOBODY in the world should ever turn on CBS for anything…. Payback! Why watch TV for only the crap that is on it. Get back to… Read more »
It’s actually run its course. She’s an author. The sister has a boyfriend. Mom is good. Now they just need to have a kid.
Plus, yes, McCarthy has her movie career and had lost all that weight. It would not be same.
Let the show go with dignity.
boo i like this show
