Mike & Molly will end its run on CBS during the second half of this television season. With a 13-episode order for season six, fans will not see a seventh season.
Fans were shocked by the news of the comedy’s cancellation. The show is a fan favorite, but there are new details about the reasons behind Mike & Molly’s quick cancellation before the series even premieres season six on CBS.
Ken Levine, a veteran sitcom writer, went to his blog to share his thoughts on the cancellation of Mike & Molly recently, and he laid the facts of the situation out on the virtual television table.
He said:
MIKE & MOLLY has performed reasonably well wherever CBS has put it. And its star, Melissa McCarthy has become a legitimate movie star. You would think for that reason alone CBS would be thrilled. They’ve captured lightening in a bottle. And yet, in fairness, it’s not like McCarthy’s rise to stardom has kicked MIKE & MOLLY to a new level of popularity. It hasn’t. Neither did THE OFFICE’S ratings suddenly skyrocket when Steve Carell got hot in films.
A big consideration is economics, especially in MIKE & MOLLY’S case. Everyone initially signs a six-year deal. The six years will be up this season. This is when having a movie star as your lead becomes not such a good thing. License fees (how much the network will pay for each episode) are usually determined in advance and then putting together your cast and production crew is like an NBA franchise building a team under the salary cap. Sometimes the costs are just too prohibitive.
And still another factor – MIKE & MOLLY is not owned by CBS. It’s a Warner Brothers show. CBS has nothing to gain longterm by MIKE & MOLLY’S success. So it’s now the ugly stepchild with a foot missing.
Fans of Mike & Molly and the cast were definitely surprised by CBS pulling the plug on this series. Would you want to see this show find new life on another network? Tell us what you think.
Keep the show!! Best show ever! Not fair canceling !!
please bring back Mike & Molly – I love it
I cant believe they are canceling mike and molly, it has become one of our favorites. They should cancel 2 broke girls instead
I just recently began watching this series and I hate I didn’t give it a try when it first started!!! I love the whole concept of the show and the love that’s shown in the family dynamics! No matter the problem through love and comedy all can be fixed…..I would love to see another network pick up the show, maybe Netflix or Amazon!
Its sad that this show is being cancelled. We loved watching it. Very funny! I would rather see two broke girls being cancelled. It has gotten so raunchy.
Ok, where is the Save Mike & Molly petition? Where do I sign to save this awesome show?
What is wrong with CBS Mike and Molly are awesome they should be picked up by another network there is to many crap sitcoms on that don’t make scents like American Dad ,Teachers come keep Mike and Molly going.
This show cannot be cancelled. It is the funniest show on television today. Somebody please do something to help save this wonderful show!!!! I am in shock!!!!!
This cancellation is ridiculous. This show is hilarious!!! We need laughter these days. I absolutely hate reality shows and this was a refreshing show. I refuse to watch reality shows, so TV is very limited these days. I do nkt understand why sit-cons always get cancelled anymore. Reality shows are boring and do nkt Keri my attention, just as gossip and work drama bites me to death. Hoping someone else will pick it up. It’s won awards so it seems like a bad move on CBS part.
This show needs to continue on another network, CBS exes. are Misguided children who like stupid reality shows.
Oh please somebody pick this show up!! Get rid of reality tv!!
The trashy reality shows get to stay and the clean funny comedies are canceled. Makes no sense.
I agree, I really hope a different network will pick them up!! Love mike and Molly!!
crazy they are letting this one go and putting other shows not as good in its place. they are getting rid of all the good shows
One of the best shows on TV so I am sure either Net or Amazon will pick it up. They have deep pockets and can pay the cast what they want. CBS could care less and will just add another dumb reality show.
