Fans of the very popular Kyra Sedgwick series, The Closer, were understandably upset to hear that the series will be coming to an end after its seventh season. Reportedly, Sedgwick made the decision to end the show rather than it being cancelled. As the highest-rated show on cable, TNT doesn’t like the idea of losing the program any more than the fans do.
Now, there’s word that TNT is working on finding a way for the show to live on, or at least for it to last a little longer. Deadline has reported that the cable channel is currently looking at a couple of different scenarios. One would extend the series by another six episodes but that would apparently require some renegotiating with Sedgwick.
TNT is also looking at the possibility of ordering nine episodes of a new series that would focus more on other characters from The Closer. The spotlight could shift to a previously supporting character, like possibly Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell) and still take place in the same setting. Or, the new show could feature some of the same characters in a new setting (hopefully a better one than say the Hill Street Blues spin-off, Beverly Hills Buntz).
If the cable channel orders both six more episodes with Sedgwick and nine episodes of a spin-off, that could give TNT a whole new season. In a similar vein to what NBC’s doing with Steve Carrell’s departure from The Office, Sedgwick would star in the first part of the season and that would transition into the series or a spin-off continuing without her. Many ideas are still being explored obviously so its unclear if a new show would still be called The Closer or if it would be given a new title.
What do you think? Would you like to see The Closer continue, even if its without Sedgwick’s Brenda Johnson character? Who would you want to see in a spin-off?

The entire cast of Closer has been a weekly delight. Every personality in the cast has entered our home bringing their highly honed entertainment skills. Miss ’em? Would I miss my right arm?
I would continue watching-even without Kyra. I will miss Brenda Leigh very much-her smarts, her addiction to chocolate, her kitten, so much more. But the other characters/actors (all of the regulars) and, of course, the current writers, could carry the show with some creative license. The quality of the writing and acting is the best on TV-except- maybe equal to some of the stuff on PBS. Please keep it going and talk Kyra to coming back occasionally, if she really can not be persuaded to continue.
I hope The Closer can stay on the air with Kyra. I don’t know why she wants to leave the show, I simply can’t understand that!
Kyra Sedgwick portrays a wonderful character, and she needs to remain on the show as Brenda Lee Johnson. I don’t think the show would be as good without her in the role.
I couldn’t agree with Sharon more emphatically. This is the best show TNT has to offer. I dont think the series could survive without Kyra Sedgwick. Do anything you can to keep her on the show. I dont think the show will last a season with the other women (whose name I cant even remember, that’s how forgetful she is) as the star.
I’ve enjoyed the show immensely and would hate to see it leave the air. There are so few good shows left for one to enjoy. This one will truly be missed if it departs. I’ve especially enjoyed the characters being played by age appropriate actors for the rank they are portraying. Also the dialog interchange between the characters is right on target. I say this after being an law-enforcement officer for twenty-one years.
Without Brenda the show is dead. She makes the show what it is. I’m so disappointed that it will not continue for many years to come. Someone pay that girl more money or something to keep her going.
I was extremely upset when I heard about the future of The Closer. I do agree that ALL of the characters are awesome, but without Kyra it would not be the same. And if she went, then so goes her parents and Fritz??? No…TNT needs to work this out and keep the show in tact. I watch every episode and rerun every single time it is on – as do my friends. It is the one show on TV that I can relate to and I am crushed at the thought of it going away. PLEASE, do not lose your… Read more »
The character Kyra has created is wonderful. However, the remaining cast members are also wonderful. It’s a shame that Kyra wants to leave this show. I feel that there are so many more shows with the remaining cast, regardless if it is a spin-off or to continue as is. This is an awesome show with so much potential for future shows. The cast ensemble is just an amazing group and deserve to move forward even if Kyra feels that she does not want to be a part of it. This show isn’t just based on her, we have all come… Read more »
This can’t be happening, TNT do something, give her more money, hire her family, promise movie roles, do something!!!!!
I WON’T watch the show without Kyra!
I’m certain that we would watch a fews episodes just to see where it would go, but it would be kind of nil without Ms. Sedgwick. TNT should focus on doing all they can in the way of renegotiating with her at all cost, since it is a quality series.
I agree with Alice! STOP canceling all of the EXCELLENT, intelligent shows!! So, yesterday all the reality shows….enough already!! I also agree, I can’t imagine The Closer, which is my favorite TV show without Kyra Sedgwick!
yes, by all means, please keep kyra, but without her………..no! quit cancelling all the good shows
The Closer has been my most enjoyed television show in many years. I do not want to see it end! Could the show continue with all the characters involved including the parents without Brenda Leigh Johnson? I believe so. The show has an identity all it’ own. She is no longer the lipstick smearing, sugar eating Chief Johnson with a naive persona and southern “thank you”. She is a part of the show no longer ‘The Closer’. Her character will be missed. However it’s become so very watered down from the beginning shows and others have developed stronger identities that… Read more »
