Last season, ABC launched 10 new scripted series. They cancelled six of them and renewed four. How will the alphabet network perform during the 2016-17 season? Stay tuned!
There’s lots of data that network execs looks at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are the major ingredient. These charts will be updated daily, as new ratings data becomes available.
ABC shows (so far): $100,000 Pyramid, 20/20, American Crime, American Housewife, America’s Funniest Home Videos, The Bachelor, Bachelor in Paradise, Battle of the Network Stars, Big Fan, Black-ish, Boy Band, The Catch, Celebrity Family Feud, Conviction, Dancing With The Stars, Designated Survivor, Dr. Ken, Downward Dog, Fresh Off the Boat, The Goldbergs, The Gong Show, The Great American Baking Show, The Great Christmas Light Fight, Grey’s Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, Imaginary Mary, In An Instant, Last Man Standing, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, Match Game, The Middle, Modern Family, Notorious, Once Upon a Time, People Icons, Quantico, The Real O’Neals, Scandal, Secrets and Lies, Shark Tank, Somewhere Between, Speechless, Steve Harvey’s Funderdome, Still Star-Crossed, To Tell The Truth, The Toy Box, What Would You Do? and When We Rise.

A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Are you surprised by any of the ratings? Which shows should be doing better? Which one do you think will be cancelled next?
I work so I don’t watch daytime TV, but I do listen to the radio and read the news on breaks. I can’t believe the View is still on the air. Just a bunch of negative has been women giving their opinions like they are facts. Makes me sick to my stomach.
Very disappointed Notorious-Conviction-Secrets and Lies- Time After Time and The Catch were cancelled. Please bring them back!
Love almost all the shows that were renewed!!
So Last Man Standing is cancelled. Well good-bye ABC. Our household will not watch your network now.
Our family totally agrees 200%!!!
Wow ABC ,you are showing your true colors. Cancelling,Last Man Standing shows your true Liberal Media bias. This makes it real easy to stop watching your network. Cancel a show that is rated 3rd in viewership. Makes sense keep The Marvel and Quantico shows that have 4 million less viewers. Last Man Standing was the only decent show you aired. Good Bye ABC from my tv remote for good. Someone with more brains than yours, will pick this show up. Maybe you can keep your Political views to your kitchen table rather that forcing them onto the American public through your… Read more »
Absolutely agree
ABC has done the same thing with GMA! They’ve even put a major Democratic advisor on as a main anchor in George S. and his only job it seems is to try to force Republicans/Conservative guests into siding with his opinions. He will interrupt them if they don’t go along with his liberal logic. I grew up on GMA when David Hartmann was the anchor but I won’t watch it after last years election. They tried so hard for Hillary.
So Last Man Standing is like in the top five of total viewership scripted shows and it gets cancelled??? And it’s on a Friday night. Evidently there are a lot of people who love to watch this show like I do. It is a great family show. I can understand why Tim Allen felt blindsided. Please do not let it go. I didn’t care about his politics. I didn’t agree with him but that’s the way real life is.
Did you actually look at the ratings, they suck. LMS is 55th in the ratings in the key ad demos and ranks low in total viewership. They will be lucky to finish in The Top 50 in viewership this year (they were 56th in viewers & 77th in demo ratings last year). ABC is the lowest rated network and after six seasons LMS is not a hit. Add in the fact ABC doesnt own the show so they get little benefit from streaming & syndication while paying fees to air the show, the only way ABC makes money is from… Read more »
Hard to get into Top 30 when you get stuck on Friday night. It does better than most shows that have optimum time slots. ABC did keep many shows that had lower ratings in all areas. It also shows why ABC is at the bottom, most of the shows they have are garbage that no one cares to watch and one of the few that are promising they hide on Friday night and eventually cancel for reasons no one truly understands.
Oh, we understands why…due to their liberal bias while hiding behind claims of substantial rating drops. No more ABC in our home!
This is an absolute shame that the Last Man Standing is cancelled. How do they justify cancelling the show that had -4.99 drop in viewership, while keeping Once Upon a Time and other shows with dismal rating and viewing? I am so sick of Hollywood forcing their rhetoric down people’s throats, and I am not a conservative.
The cancellation of Last Man Standing is an example of why so many viewers are watching You Tube, Netflix. ABC now has nothing worth watching. I hope another network will pick it up. You can actually hear more differing views on Last Man Standing than on any other show. To bad diversity doesn’t count at ABC. Good Bye ABC, I cancel you!
We agree GOOD BYE ABC hope another network picks it up! Hollywood only believes in Their Freedom of Speech! Also hope people stop going to movies hit here people where it hurts in their wallets they don’t understand we made and can brake them!!
LAST MAN STANDING Thank you ABC for helping me make up my mind I will not be watching your network any more. You cancel a show with good ratings better ratings than some of the other shows renewed. You keep crap like THE VIEW on. Shame on you.
AGREE 200% we will not be watching ABC anymore! If enough stop then we can cut them out of jobs!!!
LAST MAN STANDING is being cancels why? Oh, I know! It’s for a political agenda. Well your customers can have an agenda also and just stop watching your programs.
Maybe conservatives should have wstched the show, look at the ratings. they are horrible. LMS is on pace to finish 55th in key demo ratings this year and is nowhere near The Top 25 in total viewers. In fact in six years LMS has never finished in the Top 30 in total viewers or Top 50 in key ad demo ratings, that isnt good. Add in the fact ABC doesnt own the show and simple Conservative Republican Free Market Economics principles dictate with so low ratings, lack of revenue, and no growth potential after 6 years of investment ABC should… Read more »
What ratings are you looking at. You must be looking at a different web site. Just scroll up.
Well ABC cancels their #3 show so that tells me conservatives need not watch TV.
Better than 9 scripted shows that were renewed.
A= All for Liberals
B= Bye Bye oposing views of our network
C= Conservatives need not apply
Why is ABC cancelling LAST MAN STANDING. It’s a great show with a great cast and is doing awesome in ratings? Makes no sense at all! Bring back LAST MAN STANDING!
Awesome in the ratings ? According to who ? They are on pace to finish 55th in the ratings this year (key ad demo), how is that awesome ? They have never in 6 years finished in The Top 30 in total audience or Top 50 in key demo ratings, that is no one’s definition of awesome, it isnt even mediocrity!
So, I guess in the end ratings really don’t matter that much seeing as the best show on ABC, Last Man Standing got axed. As a matter of fact, seems it did much better than most of the shows ABC “chose” to renew. Hmm….. Nielsen should probably consider a new business.
LMS was 16th in the ratings on ABC (key ad demos) and virtually everything rated behind it was cancelled. Read the chart
I am hoping that Quantico has a season 3 – I love watching how the cast works well with each other – they need to have this team as one force of great agents – So much can really happen with them – Find the right organization ( CIA , FBI or even DEA ) and make the team a force to be reckoned with– so much to take from !! Bring your best to the table and watch this show ratings improve
Why is Last Man Standing cancelled?? it did WAY better than a bunch of shows ABC renewed!!! it was the only show I watched on ABC — and religiously. now I hope some OTHER network picks it up. FABULOUSLY funny show (but perhaps just a little too honest for ABC??)
Why is Last Man Standing being cancelled? Great show, awesome cast, good show for families & apparently, good ratings! Doesn’t make much sense–or is it because of its Conservative “bent”?
