There’s lots of data that the networks look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but the ratings are the main ingredient.
Wonder if your favorite’s already been renewed or cancelled? Visit our CBS 2011-12 show page.

A couple of notes about these charts:
The averages included in these charts are based on the final numbers, not the fast affiliate ratings that are typically reported the next morning. The final numbers become available about a day after the broadcasts or in some cases several days later. The chart are updated as the new data becomes available.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers (not total viewers) are what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating versus one with a lot more overall viewers.
Demo numbers are reported by Nielsen using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). We used to report averages that way but it ends up being hard to see any movement week to week. It can also be a little misleading since a show with a 2.35 average and a show with a 2.44 average will both round to a 2.4 rating.
In these charts, we’re including the demo average rounded to the 10th (2.4) as well as the 100th place (2.41) in parenthesis so you can get a better idea of how the average has been affected by the latest episode’s demo rating.
The letter grades are relative (kind of like grading on a curve) and are based on the individual network’s demo performance. All of the networks have very different gauges for success right now. (A successful show for The CW would get quickly cancelled on CBS.) Our system for coming up with letter grades isn’t perfect but it should still give you an idea of where the different shows stand.
*The grades for TV series that run on Friday and Saturday nights are weighted a little differently, to compensate for airing on little-watched nights.
What do you think? Are surprised by any of the ratings? Are any of your favorite shows in danger of being cancelled? Which should be doing better?
“A Gifted Man” is refreshing because it is interesting, different, and clean. I feel the same way about “Blue Bloods”. I appreciate the way a family sits together around a dinner table. Please do not cancel these shows.
I’m from Brazil and here, we love A gifted man, because it is interesting and well done, with smart stories. I thing it deserves a second season.
PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL A GIFTED MAN. THIS IS THE BEST SHOW ON TV. I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT. I AM SO TIRED OF ALL THE COP SHOWS. THIS SHOW IS DIFFERENT AND THE CAST IS GREAT!!!!!!!!
My favorite programs? A Gifted Man, Person of Interest, The Good Wife, Flashpoint, all of which received horrible Demo ratings or are already gone. Everyone I know who watches TV likes these programs. They are intelligent, interesting, compassionate, have wonderful characters and character building, are well-written, keep the viewer’s interest throughout the whole program. Flashpoint was only on during the second half of the summer (for years) and was cancelled. A Gifted Man has already been cancelled. So when is Person of Interest going to disappear. I can’t believe that these programs are cancelled while idiotic programs like Two &… Read more »
Again – PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL ANY OF THESE SHOWS.
Thank you.
AI agree with Chris Bush who sais he/she could not believe that “Hawaii FiveO” and “Person of Interest” had such low ratings. These, too, are excellent shows! I was not going to watch “Hawaii Five-O” because I did not think that anyone could do the show any justice, but Steve proved me wrong. I do not like this Danno. To me he demeans Steve. “Person of Interest” has kept my interest from the first show. What an excellent show with a different view on how to save lives. Please do not allow these low ratings to keep these shows from… Read more »
I hope that I am not the only one posting comments to keep these shows on the air! Come on everyone, post so that these shows could continue to another season
A Gifted Man – This new show is well worth keeping it on the air for another season. It is great that they have a clinic that will help those who don’t have money to go to a hospital. The stories this show tells show meaning and I like the way his ex-wife appears to support him. I know a lot of people may not like that, but she is guiding him and encouraging him in the right direction.
CSI”Miami – David Caruso is marvelous in this role. Not only is her a good investigator, but I love the way he is with the family or person at the end of the show giving them support. I hate to see this show go off the air and lose that perspective that no one else does.
I do believe the low ratings for CSI:NY is because you need to bring back Melina Kanadarades. She and Gary Sinise made that show. I like Sela Ward, but she is too motherly to the cast and no one wants to see that. Melina is perfect for that job. I don’t know whay she was released from her contract, but if it is because she ‘may’ have requested more pay, then you need to bring her back so that the excellent ratings could return in order to keep this fabulous show on the air.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do NOT cancel “A Gifted Man”. “CSI: Miami”, CSI: NY” and “Unforgettable”. We need some good, CLEAN programs without profanany, sex and sexual inuendos in them. PLEASE, PLEASE don’t lower your standards for the sake of those who do like that type of program, thereby removing the morality of people and teaching young people that it is okay to watch such programs. Please look to the future of our young people who, hopefully will teach their children, if they have any, that they need to keep their morals and live a clean life with values Thank you… Read more »
I cant believe hawaii 5o and person of interest received such low reviews. The shows are great…
wow I can’t believe you would cancel A gifted man. The cast was so fun and well fitted.
Older people get tired of seeing so much violence all the time . pleaseeeeeeeee keep it on.
Please don’t cancel A Gifted Man. I finally have something that is moving, interesting and clean to watch. There are no sexual innuendos that are so commonplace in your top rated shows that I have to turn them off. It provides just good , suspenseful interacting, well developed and unusual charachters, and interesting situations that make for a realistic, easy to watch story line.
A Gifted Man is actually an intelligent show worth watching, featuring real-life problems, not “reality. It is very entertaining and gives us something to watch on Friday night!! I cannot believe that the ridiculous “mike and Molly” and the re-vamped but so lame “Two and a half men” rate so much better! Person of Interest is dark and brooding and Interesting and should not be cancelled. I am older, educated and don’t go out much on Fridays, so am happy to have GM to watch. Please don’t cancel either of these shows!
