Last season, CBS introduced only seven new shows during the regular season. They cancelled three, renewed three, and one (Supergirl) moved to The CW. How will their new programming do in the ratings this time around? Stay tuned.
CBS shows this season (so far): 2 Broke Girls, 48 Hours, 48 Hours: NCIS, 60 Minutes, The Amazing Rice, The Big Bang Theory, Big Brother, Blue Bloods, Bull, Candy Crush, The Case Of, CBSN: On Assignment, Code Black, Criminal Minds, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, Doubt, Elementary, The Great Indoors, Hawaii Five-0, Hunted, Kevin Can Wait, Life in Pieces, MacGyver, Madam Secretary, Man with a Plan, Mom, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, NCIS: New Orleans, The Odd Couple, Pure Genius, Ransom, Salvation, Scorpion, Superior Donuts, Survivor, Training Day, Undercover Boss and Zoo.
There’s lots of data that CBS execs look at when deciding whether to renew or cancel a TV series but ratings are typically the biggest piece. Here’s how the network’s shows are doing so far.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated charts, please try reloading the page. You can also see them here and here.
A couple of notes about these charts:
These figures are updated automatically as new ratings are released. The averages are based on the final national numbers (live plus same day viewing), unless marked with an asterisk (*). For technical reasons, I have to resort them manually so feel free to let me know if I missed something.
Keep in mind that the demo numbers are typically what’s most important to advertisers. Therefore, that’s how the networks measure success. Advertisers pay more for ad time on a show that has a higher demo rating. Because older viewers don’t count? No, it’s because younger viewers watch less traditional TV and are harder to reach.
Demo numbers are typically reported using the 10ths decimal place (2.4, for example). In the averages, I’m using an extra decimal for easier ranking. The networks take into account when shows air on Fridays and Saturdays, nights when TV viewership is lower.
What do you think? Which shows are you rooting for? Which one isn’t as big a hit as you thought? Are you hoping any series will get cancelled to make way for something else?
MacGyver has really grown on me. I was a huge fan of the original and rather disappointed with this at first. But, my son liked it so we continued to watch. It has some great nods to the original but isn’t trying to be an exact remake and I think that is why I’m liking it. George Eads, Jack, brings some fun to the show without being hokey like the original Jack Dalton. I definitely prefer the episodes that don’t take such a serious note. Hope it stays!
Please do not cancel Code Black – it’s a great show!
PLEASE SAVE NOTORIOUS! It is One of Our Favorite Shows at The VA Hospital In Chicago, IL. WE LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with you Tina. I love that show. Especially after tonight..
Please save Code Black! It has become one of our favorite shows. It has gotten even better with the addition of Rob Lowe. Love this show!!!
It seems like all of the ratings (not just CBS) have been declining in the last two years. What is happening? Is no one watching TV anymore?
These are the kinds of numbers that got Limitless cancelled and Supergirl moved to the CW.
People watch hulu or netflix more now, everything is going to online viewing which is causing our local stations to dip in ratings and causing really good shows to get cancelled.
To cancel Elementary would make me wonder if CBS is going strictly for the annoying list of sitcoms they start, stop, bring back…. who wants to watch a station that continually teases, offers & then (like Person of Interest) pulls and now you’re saying elementary is next…. why bother paying for TV when nothing is on long enough…. or someone thinks that popularity for too long is bad?
I find it very sad that anytime a good show comes along that appeals to a more intellectual crowd that it has to be canceled due to low ratings. I am commenting about Elementary. It is the only show I watch now. What does this say about the intelligence level of our culture and the greed of CBS? Oh well, soon I will give up cable altogether . No reason to watch anymore.
“intelligence level of our culture” can be summed up in two words: Walking Dead. Which I did watch the first couple seasons of but has now become a training ground for Rick Baker special effects interns & wannabes.
Please don’t even think about cancelling elementary!! Of all the non-sense on t v your fortunate to have a great show. Pick good scripts, you already have a great show. ( stay with real scripts that are plausible). I won’t watch mindless nonsense.
I am looking forward to Pure Genius each week. PLEASE do NOT cancel it!
CBS better not cancel Code Black! Out of the medical shows we watch, Chicago Med and the Night Shift, Code Black is the best. It brings out so many emotions in you while you are watching. Seriously, what is happening at CBS?
why did the idiots take off dallas and gangland
Pure Genius dropped to 1.0 in the final ratings.
Madam Secretary needs to go. The ratings are pathetic. They aren’t going to get much better. Nobody will want to watch this crap in syndication,. CBS needs to dump it no later than the end of the season.
I love Madam Secretary. Just got into it, good storylines, good cast – TL and TD work so well together, as does the rest of the cast.
Code Black should keep Boris Kodjoe’s character “Will Campbell”. I know that many Code Black fans have been less than sympathetic towards “Will”, but please remember that many of the greatest anti-heroes in dramatic television have made their respective shows GREAT. I’m thinking: William Daniels as “Mark Craig” in St. Elsewhere; Fyvush Finkel as “Douglas Wambaugh” in Picket Fences; Dennis Franz as “Andy Sipowicz” in NYPD Blue; and Laura Innes as “Kerry Weaver” in ER. These characters add a special “extra” dimension to a show’s storyline development, and keep their viewers both conflicted and captivated. These characters drive a show’s… Read more »
CBS, please keep Code Black. It is THE BEST medical drama currently on television. Compelling viewing (to say the least).
Couldn’t agree more. I love the show. They can take away Chicago Med (yes, I know it’s on NBC) because Code Black is so much better. Just have Oliver Platt transfer to Angels Memorial and we’ll be all set.
Completely agree. Code Black is the best medical show on TV since House.
