ABC has ordered the TV show pilot for Hail Mary, a single camera comedy, based on the Austrian TV series, Braunschlag. The pilot is from Brian Gallivan, creator of The McCarthys — which was cancelled by CBS after one season — with The Goldbergs‘ Seth Gordon and Operation Repo‘s Tariq Jalil.
While David Schalko’s Aussie original series was an eight-episode one-hour program, Deadline says Hail Mary is a half-hour adaptation.
Here are more Hail Mary details from The Hollywood Reporter:
The comedy hails from The McCarthys creator Brian Gallivan and Sony Pictures Television-based Seth Gordon and Tariq Jalil’s Intrigue. The ABC Studios/SPT co-production centers on a young, small-town mayor named Mary Wolf, who has dysfunctional siblings, a dying father, disgruntled citizens, a nearly bankrupt town and the mafia breathing down her neck. Only a miracle can help her — so she fakes one. The ABC pilot is a switch on the Aussie original, created by David Schalko, which had a male lead. The comedy was developed last season at Fox with Rob Riggle attached to star in the 20th TV entry but did not move forward. Jalil’s Intrigue took the project to Sony, which connected Gallivan and Gordon to the comedy. Gallivan, Gordon and Jalil will executive produce the SPT series alongside ORF-Enterprises, which oversaw the Aussie original that ran for eight episodes in 2012. Gordon will direct the pilot.
Deadline adds:
Braunschlag had an eight-episode run on the ORF Network in 2012. The hourlong show generated the best primetime ratings in the network’s 20-year history and received the Romy Awards Jury Prize in 2012.
What do you think? Do you like the sound of the Hail Mary TV show? Do you think this adaptation will appeal to a US audience? If Hail Mary is ordered to series, do you think you will check out the premiere on ABC?
Hopefully it will go to air, I love Australian series. In my and many other’s opinion, foreign especially British sitcoms are far superior and is the reason why the US recreates them. Most people assume the programs they watch are American concepts but not all are; we have been copying them as early as the 70’s.
i think that i dont get the math. buying & producing a restructured pre-existing concept that comes from a foreign source and audience testing it sounds like some sort of money laundering process because it seems that its successes, though extraordinary, are generally far outnumbered by their failures. We have no end of fun, my Mom, my brother & his French wife, when we visit them in France and settle in with a bottle of wine after the kids are in bed and turn on the tv.. My brother grew up here in Canada and has lived the other half… Read more »
