Starz was very happy with the early reception of their new Outlander TV show so they gave it an early season two renewal. The cable channel has often given quick renewals but the series are then often cancelled after two seasons. Will Starz regret giving Outlander a second year order so soon? Would it have been cancelled if they had waited?
The Outlander series revolves around Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945. She finds herself mysteriously thrown back in time, to 1743 Scotland, and forced to marry another man to save her life. A passionate affair is ignited. The rest of the cast includes Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish, Gary Lewis, Annette Badland, Stephen Walters, Laura Donnelly, Lotte Verbeek, James Fleet, Duncan Lacroix, Roderick Gilkison, Simon Callow, Grant O’Rourke, Bill Paterson, and Simon Meacock.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.
1/29 update: Have you heard that season two has been cancelled? Well, it hasn’t.
Final season averages: 0.26 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 1.04 million total viewers.

What do you think? Do you like the Outlander TV show? Do you think it should have been renewed for a second season or cancelled instead?
Enough is enough of perverted sick sex and masacosim!
I used to really like this show.
Won’t watch it anymore.
Since Season 2 of Outlander has started shooting, are we going to hear if Season 3 gets the okay for the go ahead? Many book fans and TV fans would be very happy to hear about its continuing onto book 3.
I love the Outlander so much that I watch each episode especially the wedding..over and over again. I love everything about these series. It simply takes my breath away.
Truly,
Inez
This is literally the most compelling show I have ever seen on television. jamie and Claire’s love and chemistry radiates through the screen. It is hands down some of the best acting I have ever seen, especially from San Heughan. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep this show going!!!! I am still rattled by the finale….I can’t stop thinking about it.
Huge congrats on this Outlander tv series. Love the historical setting, the political intrigue. Love that it has a Sci fi slant to it and that it jumps to the past. How does a modern day person survive in the past with the modern day knowledge they bring with them. A bit like A Yankee in King Arthurs Court. Love it. Love it. And the other attribute that Outlander has, is the authentic feel of it, the costumes, the scenery and the photography. Characters don’t look like they just stepped out of the hairdressers! Kudos to Starz for picking up… Read more »
Please keep Outlander. Starz it was very good to watch something that was well written. the cast is great, costumes look like the time period it was in. Please keep it. for a 3rd season.
I love this TV series. The cast, the costumes, the scenery, the music, the depiction of the time period, everything is just spot on. I only subscribed to Starz for this series, and will be so disappointed if they don’t follow the entire story to its end. I am really troubled that there is rumor of cancellation so early. This is a great show, and has done the best job of bringing a book to life that I’ve ever seen. Please, Sterz, give us more!
I thought the last episode was too dark. They need to stay closer to the books which were award-winning. Future episodes deal with more time travel and will be mesmerizing if handled well. Claire is pregnant…where will the baby be born??? Starz, please renew!
The Series is extremely well done even for those if us die hard fans! I signed up for stars JUST for this series and it has been worth it. Hope next season is a go.
Never read the books but the series is addictive. Can’t wait for the next series. But the finale was disturbing
It is hard not to make comparisons with the book, but I know both time limitations and cost have to drive filming decisions. I was disturbed by the graphic rape scene in the book. I also understand it would take way too long to depict the healing and likely not faced-paced enough for the series. I thought the rape scene was reasonably well handled. I thought the post-rape trauma could have been handled better. One of my favorite scenes from the book was when Jaime realizes Claire has actually saved him the use of his hand. Self-loathing, PTSD, were part… Read more »
I missed the scene where Jamie cries over his hand too. Wish it hadn’t been all about the rape. Sad that shock value was more important than the real story of love and sacrifice. I didn’t like the finale. The producer just exploited the rape and left out the best part of the book. Not watching the next book be butchered.
It is still possible to see the scene with the hand, at least I hope. His hand is still in a splint so it may just happen next season.
This show is a rip off of the 1960s Dan Curtis’ Dark Shadows tv series whereby Victoria Winters get sent back in time to a similar era and is deemed a witch, etc. The Black Jack scenes are why the finale’s ratings were in the toilet. Homosexuality and S&M is NOT enjoyable entertainment, especially for a show done in the 1700s. Dan Curtis would have dobe a better job of producing this today if he was a live.
i definately want more of this show. It is the best TV I have ever seen. Great story, amazing acting, and brilliant location. It is ground breaking and more viewers will come to see it as such.
PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THIS SHOW,…….
I wasn’t bothered by the rape. What got me was that it was the main focus instead of the power of Claire’s love for Jamie and how she healed him like it was in the book. The healing part was lame. I don’t think the writer understands romance. Also what they’ve done with Jamie bothers me. In the book he is still brave and joking around trying to get through it. Claire compares him to John Wayne. Jamie from the books would never have been suicidal like that. As an 18th century Catholic, it wouldn’t have been an option. Sam… Read more »
I agree with you Raven, we really don’t want to see more Frank, BJR, and Menzies in season 2. They all but eliminated the Claire and Jamie romance in season 1 by adding too much Frank and BJR. They want the fans of the book to support the series and their efforts, but they won’t give the fans the story they want to see. Just because Ron Moore likes Menzies and the character Frank, is no reason to mess up the story of Jamie and Claire. Gabaldon tells enough of Frank’s story in the book for readers to understand who… Read more »
Loved outlander hope this is not the end . Such great acting . From the most loved to the most hated characters!!! Wow.
And they don’t regret it. Starz personnel said they are pleased with how it is doing. Are they just making stuff up in this article?
