ABC cancelled four series last week, and now Craig Erwich, President of ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, is revealing the reasoning behind dropping Rebel, For Life, American Housewife, and Mixed-ish.
Erwich said the following about the cancellation of the four shows, per Deadline:
“They are all unique shows who on their own specific timeline where they are creatively and with the audience. I can say that just because we are not ordering new seasons does not take anything away from the impact that these shows had creatively or how many fans they have on ABC. These are difficult business decisions but we are really proud of the runs that all of these shows had.”
As for Rebel, Erwich did speak about that series directly. The series was canceled after airing just four episodes. Katey Sagal, Erin Brockovich and Krista Vernoff all spoke out after the Thursday night series was cancelled. Erwich said the following about the still airing ABC series:
“Krista Vernoff is not just an amazing talent, she is a valued and beloved part of the Disney family. We gave Rebel a really considerable launch and a launch effort. It was a huge priority for us for midseason. One of the advantages of a stable schedule is, you can focus and platform new shows, which Rebel was a beneficiary of Unfortunately, it did not garner the audience that we needed it to do, so we had to make that decision.”
For Life is being shopped to other outlets, and the same could happen for Rebel.

I am so disappointed in ABC. We are inspired by the characters and content and ARE NOT HAPPY this show is being cancelled. So tired of becoming invested in a show then having it yanked. I think I am going to sell my TV.

I love Rebel, and I really liked For Life as well. I wish they would quit canceling great shows for mindless comedy or more reality shows. Please keep these on, or give them to another network. They deserve it!
They made a huge mistake canceling Rebel.. How can you judge a show after only airing 4 or 5 episodes.. The cancel culture is surely at work here.. Katey Sagal is a fantastic actress.. Her performances in Sons Of Anarchy was like no other.. With Rebel, you didn’t even give her or the cast a chance.. Shame on You.. You ought to be disgusted with yourselves..The Cancel Culture, you Stink and your are Evil.. Big, Big, Mistake You Made.. Rebel is a great show.. I Hope Another Network Picks It Up……..!!!!!!!!!
Absolutely LOVE ‘Rebel’. The whole cast is great but I have to give a shout out to the BRILLiant Andy Garcia. I am so disappointed to hear that the show is not being renewed .
Bad decision!
It is a shame to cancel Rebel. This represents part of the real world and what it takes to be heard without money. I love the pro-bonolife being shown. Too many people need to be heard and served. Bring it back
Rebel was finally, a good show to watch on tv. I was grateful and excited! Have enjoyed every episode and you’re putting it?!

In the quad city area media com cable service. Is not carrying ABC. Which ABC programming we do not get. I have to wait until next day to watch greys anatomy on Hulu. I just watched 6 episodes of Rebel. On Hulu. I’m behind just learned about the show.
It’s a loss to not have access to ABC. Also the inconsistency of tv programming which is understandable during the pandemic. Media Com quad cities Iowa.

I hate it when these so-called networks wait until you find a show, get interested in it and then jank the rug right from under you after you get invested in it. I liked this show. It is great. The characters are very good and serious about their work. It is very compelling. The characters, especially Katey are really awesome and funny. Rebel is a great show. Katy Segal and all the actors are wonderful. American housewife is so funny. Please do not cancel these shows.
I am an avid viewer of these shows and if I have to be out I make sure I record it to watch it as soon as possible. For Life and Rebel are my favorite.

I was totally enjoying Rebel. There aren’t many shows that are watchable these days. You needed to give it more time. Each week was better because we got to understand the characters. Very disappointed in your network. It had great character developement possibilities. That was about the only thing I watch on your network.
