Not counting the Prison Break revival, FOX introduced 10 new TV shows during the regular 2016-17 television season and cancelled seven of them. Now they’ve picked up Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane’s new space adventure comedy drama. Can his animated series success translate to live-action sci-fi? Will The Orville TV show be cancelled or renewed for a second season on FOX? Stay tuned.
The Orville stars MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Halston Sage, J Lee, Mark Jackson, Chad L. Coleman, Norm Macdonald, Larry Joe Campbell, Victor Garber, Brian George, and Rachael MacFarlane. In 2417, Ed Mercer (Seth MacFarlane) is promoted to captain The U.S.S. Orville, with the assistance of First Officer Kelly Grayson (Palicki). Unfortunately, she’s his ex-wife, and her presence acts as a bridle on his enthusiasm. Whether facing off with the Krill, a dangerous alien race, or attempting rescues on behalf of the Planetary Union, the human and alien crew still must deal with their mundane issues and each other.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show’s likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly in the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available — usually the next day, around 11:30am EST/8:30am PST. Refresh to see the latest.
12/8 update: You can see the latest night’s ratings in context.
Note: If you’re not seeing the updated chart, please try reloading the page or view it here.
Note: These are the Live + Same Day Ratings which include “live” viewing plus delayed DVR viewing, up until 3am local time that same night. Ratings marked with an “*” are the fast affiliate ratings and will be updated with the Live+SD numbers when they are made available. Typically, networks get paid for C+3 ratings which includes DVR viewing within three days of the original airing when commercials are watched. Those numbers are rarely released to the press.
What do you think? Do you like The Orville TV series? Should it be cancelled or renewed for a second season on FOX?
11/2 update: The Orville is renewed for season two on FOX. Details here.
I watched 2 episodes and thoroughly enjoyed both. Please renew the show and I will watch every one of them!
Already was renewed
The show is pretty excellent. Sure there are a few rough spots but after the 3rd episode you can see the direction. They are taking and its getting better. Lets not forget the show its modeled after didn’t really find its feet until the 3rd season. There is a delicate balance between comedy, drama and sci-fi that is satisfying and this show is almost a bullseye I think after a little seasoning it will be remembered as one of the greats and we will all wonder why only got 10 seasons.
Absolutely, watching them get their footing me be nervous. I could see where it was going and it’s very edgy and so I was afraid they might mess it up. that’s to say that I loved some shows more than others, but all in all I didn’t want to miss a single one. One of the things I really loved about the show was that they were real people, goofing around in their free-time, making wisecracks when things were tense, but serious when it came to getting it done. I really like how they use aliens to evaluate societal isuues… Read more »
Love it!!
Wasn’t sure what to expect with this show. Kind of had negative expectations going in but after 2 episodes I’m a fan.
Just want to note something here. Starting with Episode 2, you’ll notice that we actually get an opening theme song and credits for The Orville. Most of the post-2009 sci-fi shows (starting with Stargate Universe and onwards) just display the title of the show for 5 seconds and then immediately cut to commercial. There was a time when every sci-fi series had at least a 30-second opening sequence of orchestrated music at the beginning of each episode, just like what The Orville is doing. This is one more reason I love watching The Orville. It brings back everything that used… Read more »
FINALLY, some REAL scifi again. Baring a few crude jokes, it’s a good balance between comedy and scifi. I also like how it now focuses on exploration instead of a “relationship” drama disguised as a scifi show.
Well they are including relationship drama but they do them in the guise of alien issues, and address the issues we have today. One race is same sex, One race the females are extremely strong physically, robot is like someone with Asperger’s, many of the people are athletic and it deals with issues some people have relating to those kind of people. I have no doubt that this show is going to upset about 35% of the people who are racist; and just perhaps it may even be able to afdress the issue of hatred by approaching it in a… Read more »
This show is proof that TV is totally out of ideas and cannot generate a new idea. I found the show dumb on the sixth grade level and full of rude language and poor humor. And how much liver pate did they have to use to get that beagle to lick its balls on camera.
I’d cancel it now and literally not run one single more mind-sucking minute of this idiotic, juvenile fart joke of a tv show.
Should be ordering Seasons 2 and 3 now! Great new show! Gives me a reason to watch Fox again! Won’t miss any episode, barring natural disasters and stupid football, of course. Cancel Sunday football before you cancel the Orville!
Like…give time to develop…even star trek took time to get going!
A certain night will help people get use to seeing it…steady..
Love it…possibilites are great here with good writters! Enjoyed much better than watching junk being sold or someone screaming into a mic!
I’m very happy it was a great show I hope the numbers stand up and continue.
Not a bad first episode and I enjoyed the more adult orientated humour.
Already watched the 1st episode for the second time. I missed it on tv due to Irma, but I like it. Hope they don’t fox up and cancel it.
I enjoyed this show and really hope it does not get canceled. It was fun and entertaining. The humor was a little cheesy but cheese makes everything better!
As a sci-fi fan, I had entered viewing of The Orville with high expectations, but I found the show’s ‘bathroom’ humor to be childish and insulting. There are other ways to add humor to a show than evoking private body parts and acts involving them. I guess that is to be expected from Seth MacFarlane. The Sci-Fi aspect which wasn’t bad, isn’t enough to make me want to watch any more episodes. Bring on the Galaxy Quest series.
“The second-biggest broadcast drama premiere in the key demo since NBC’s “This Is Us” last September (2.8).” — Variety I think that alone speaks volumes as to how many of us are feeling deprived of lighthearted sci-fi in the past decade, that we tuned in to see what The Orville was all about. Yes, this was only the first episode, but had Hurricane Irma not preempted the premiere in some markets, the ratings could’ve been even higher. 91% of Google users like The Orville, in contrast to 90% of the critics who hate it. As far as I’m concerned, I… Read more »
