Constantine could be coming back to the small screen, but fans will not see Matt Ryan (above) in the role. JJ Abrams is working on a new reboot that will head to HBO Max if ordered to series. A pilot has been written by Guy Bolton, and a writers room will open next month.
Deadline revealed the following about the new Constantine:
“The character is set to be cast as a diverse lead, a departure from the one played by Matt Ryan in the NBC series, which aired for one season between 2014-2015. That series was developed by David Goyer and Daniel Cerone and similarly based on the DC Comics character John Constantine, a British exorcist and occult detective who hunts the supernatural.”
This will be the third incarnation of the character to be filmed. Keanu Reeves played the character in the Constantine feature film from 2005. Ryan starred in the Constantine TV series which aired on NBC for one season before being cancelled. Ryan returned to the role for an animated web series, Constantine: City of Demons, and then, on Arrow on The CW. He currently plays the character on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow series.
No word on when this series could land on HBO Max.

Matt Ryan has been my favorite Constantine and it doesn’t seem right to write him out of the roll. Constantine fans are pretty solid on this..

I’m all for a reboot as long as it stays true to the comic book character. He needs to be gritty, vulgar, cocky, British and a mess. And Jasper can’t be a witness to the things Constantine does.
Not happy at all. Matt Ryan is constantine and JJ Abrahams shouldn’t be be disloyal to the character and the fans by changing how we know and love him. It really hurts.

I’d love to see a new series of Constantine but it has to be matt Ryan, maybe something set after his time on the wave rider, he’s the only person who truly got the character right, keanu reeves version was literally keanu playing keanu, didn’t even get the suit right

As long as he looks like Constantine and sounds and acts like Constantine..and is not remotely close to that Reeves garbage, I’m all for it. Matt Ryan is Constantine in the Arrowverse, but the Flash movie/TV crossover shows that two totally different versions of the character can exist in the Multiverse…and as long as they leave M.R.’s version alone and don’t remove him just to have the other exist…go for it.
