Extinct has gone the way of the woolly mammoth. BYUtv has cancelled its Extinct TV show after one season of ten episodes. In a refreshing turn of events, the non-profit network issued a statement acknowledging the Extinct cancellation, and didn’t try to reframe it as as a “limited event series” which was always intended to be a single season program.
A post-apocalyptic science fiction drama from creators Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston, Extinct stars Chad Michael Collins, Victoria Atkin, Jaclyn Hales, Yorke Fryer, Jack Depew, Matthew Bellows, and Jake Stormoen. The BYUtv series kicks off with aliens regenerating the human race, 400 years after its extinction. Now that they’re back, those who have returned embark upon quest to understand what is going on and why they are here.
Here’s the Extinct cancellation announcement, from BYUtv:
The BYUtv original scripted sci-fi series, Extinct, will not be renewed for a second season
Dear Extinct viewers,
Since the season finale in November, many of you have inquired about a second season of Extinct. This is a decision we have carefully considered since this breakout series launched earlier last year. As with any program or series on BYUtv, decisions like this are difficult, and never made without considerable analysis. After much discussion and debate, we have decided to not renew Extinct for a second season.
We recognize many of you will be disappointed to hear this. Like you, we understand the feelings when a beloved show is canceled. Unfortunately, the approval and cancelation cycle is part of the ebb and flow of any television network. But we wanted you to understand why we reached this decision. Unlike most networks who make renewal decisions based solely on audience size and the resulting financial impact of those ratings, we as a non-profit, cause-based network have the luxury of using broader, more qualitative data points. For example, we weigh the content and message of the series itself, its resonance with fans, its uniqueness in the TV landscape, and ultimately its ability to live up to our strategic aims as a content source that connects with families.
To be sure, Extinct was a bold experiment into this genre for BYUtv. And we were proud to bring this series to you. We’re grateful to our talented production partners on Extinct including GoFilms, Taleswapper, Orson Scott Card, and the remarkable cast and tireless crew of the series. Most of all, we appreciate you—the passionate fans of the show. While the Extinct chapter may be ending, the good news is that BYUtv is more committed than ever to producing unique, innovative, and purposeful stories that families can watch together.
Thank you again for your loyalty and trust as a viewer. And please stay tuned as we pledge to bring you even more world-class television for families in 2018 and beyond.
What do you think? Did you watch the first season of the Extinct TV series? Should BYUtv have cancelled or renewed Extinct for a second season. Sound off, in the comments.
Can’t believe no highly anticipated season 2. Enjoyed the show a lot sad.
I just watched the 10 shows I thought it was moving slowly but put that down to forming the base. would have liked a 2ed season
sad!!! I really enjoyed he first season and was looking forward to a second.
I was actually quite surprised at how good the show was. I started the show with low expectations and ended up binge watching it in a day. Sad there won’t be a season 2
I actually quite enjoyed the first session and was impressed with the special effects and acting as well. Sad that there won’t be a 2nd Season.
Yes, I am disappointed that Extinct has been cancelled. However, I am looking forward to …hopefully…more shows similar to it. I love sci-if and am saddened and disgusted by what the mainstream media consider “quality” entertainment…with all the horrible language and deviant behaviors exhibited.
Please hurry!!!
I enjoyed watching extinct with my grandson. We would pick a day and sit down and an episode online. I just told him that there was not going to be a second season and he was disappointed as well.
I’m so disappointed that Extinct will not continue. I’m a huge fan of Orson Scott Card and hope he will write a series of books that will continue this innovative story. This is the second series I have loved that BYUTV has cancelled without even a wrap up episode. Makes me want to be careful about getting hooked on their new shows!
I loved Extinct. Eagerly watched for the return for Season 2. There were so many teaching elements presented. I hope it will return.
To whom it may concern: Not that it matters, I am a loyal watcher of almost every show on BYUtv. I was REALLY surprised to see a syfy show with Mormon values in your lineup! You see, I’m a new Mormon. I joined in July 2016. Being a convert of this church, it was refreshing to see a religious television station teach religion through a science fiction show like EXTINCT. As I watched each episode, I was reminded of something I read in D&C, or read in the Book of Mormon, or was part of what a speaker said at… Read more »
I agree 100%!!! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it came back and was contracted by mainstream media? What an incredible opportunity for teaching the gospel that would be! I appreciate your comments and congratulate you on your recent membership.
We dropped satellite tv and found internet TV (self reliant course, LDS business college) in an effort to cut bills. You finally caught my attention with Extinct; but now it’s gone. I love all BYU TV but to be honest, I can only take so much of it at a time. Extinct is the ONLY show I could watch any day, any time. Thank you, I thought it was a great show! I’ll be staring at my TV waiting for season 2.
Typical. A good Sci-fi show gets canceled for apparently no reason. It sure seemed to have a good base of fans. I guess even the low budget BYUtv is just like the big Networks now, get a good sci-fi show and kill it.
My husband and I loved that series we recorded it and watched it Faithfully. It’s really sad that audience opinion does not matter anymore. Every time I get into a really good series it gets canceled. What, do I have bad taste? Am I in the minority are we the only ones that loved and look forward to the show? Doesn’t audience loyalty matter anymore at all. knot that it’ll make any difference, but I implore you to give us season 2

You guys said you wanted us to understand why you canceled the show, yet never offered an explanation. You explained how you are cause-based and don’t rely solely on audience size, etc. But never actually stated WHY the show was canceled. You didn’t state what it did or did not do that resulted in it not being able to live up to our strategic aims as a content source that connects with families.
Ignore their ’cause’ based spiel. They show didn’t make money so they cancelled it.
