It looks like Unforgettable is joining Reckless on the casualty list this week. CBS has decided to cancel Unforgettable (for the second time) after three seasons on the air.
Unforgettable follows Carrie Wells (Poppy Montgomery), a police detective who has hyperthymesia — a rare medical condition that gives her the ability to visually remember everything. Unfortunately, the one thing she can’t remember is what happened on the day her sister was killed. The show’s cast also includes Dallas Roberts, Dylan Walsh, Tawny Cypress, James Hiroyuki Liao, and Jane Curtin.
The series debuted on CBS in the fall of 2011 and the first season averaged a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 11.3 million viewers. That wasn’t good enough for the network and they cancelled it in May 2012.
Sony Pictures TV (which co-produces with CBS TV Studios) shopped the series to other outlets like TNT and Lifetime. Ultimately, CBS ended up reversing their cancellation to pick it up for a second season of 13 episodes for a Summer 2013 run. They later renewed it for season three and another summer run.
There’s no denying that the numbers have been inching downward. The second season averaged a 1.0 rating with 7.06 million and the third, which wrapped a month ago, averaged a 0.9 rating with 6.09 million.
Talks had reportedly been underway for a fourth season order but, for whatever reason, that’s not happening on CBS.
There are currently 48 episodes of Unforgettable — not enough for a syndication package. However, Sony TV has a history of finding a way to keep shows alive. Though there’s been no word of efforts to find another home for the show yet, the studio has incentive to get more episodes produced for a syndication package.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Unforgettable has been cancelled again? Would you watch a fourth season on another channel?
My husband and I both love Unforgettable!
We’ve been hooked since Season 1 and have waited anxiously for each season. We are both retired police officers, and though some of their practices were obviously made for tv. It was a great show! We’d love to see you find a way to bring it back for future seasons!
Will keep trying. Another summer series was canceled yesterday–which will mean it now competes with “U”to get picked up next summer. That makes it harder for “U.”
I enjoyed the show .hope someone picks it up
We are trying. And (more importantly) so is Sony Pictures TV. Keep fingers crossed.
I’d watch Unforgettable where ever it goes! I like it! I’m sad it’s canceled. 🙁
I love this show and was waiting for the two leads to get back together again before it ends. Please find a new home!
Will keep trying!
I am so upset, I love this show. If another network picks it up I will definitely watch it but how will I know if it does come back
I am contacting Sony Pictures TV in November for an update. If it does get picked up, it will get much publicity–because it is so rare that a show gets canceled twice, and revived twice. Thanks.
Unforgettable should be picked up by someone else or CBS should change their mind. I really enjoyed watching the show. It was great to have something interesting to watch in the summer.
I doubt CBS would change their mind–again. But anything is possible. More likely is if another network, able to keep production costs low and advertising revenue high, will pick up “Unforgettable.” We are all hoping so.
Unforgettable is a wonderful show. I agree TNT or USA should pick it up for another 8 or 9 seasons.
I will be happy if TNT, USA, or anyone else takes it for a season, looks how well it does, and then decides about another season. Both TNT and USA have had big problems, and I would be delighted if they “make room for Unforgettable.”
I will start writing letters and sending emails it CBS and USA & TNT. It can’t hurt.
No, it cannot. But I suspect the series has been submitted to TNT, USA, and (at least) 2 other networks. The hard part is the networks (considering taking “U”) calculating production costs, checking where costs can be reduced, checking what ad rates a potential advertiser will agree to pay, and learning if there is a substantial profit. If the profit is there, it will find a home. Thanks.
I just loved Unforgettable and cannot believe it is cancelled. Please bring it back.
You and a million of us are missing “Unforgettable.” I have been in contact with Sony Pictures TV, who owns the series. They are trying their hardest to get another network to produce new episodes, so that it returns next year (on another network). Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
This was one of my favorite TV shows. I wish some other network would pick it up.
You, and a whole lot of us. If Sony Pictures TV can “strike a deal” with another network, the series will return. (I think I told you I contacted them.) It all comes down to money. The network has to determine what they can pay, and figure out what it will cost to produce an episode. Sony has to be very flexible in their negotiations.
When they get a show on t.v. that the whole family can watch together they take it off because of the ratings. There is no sex ,no bad words and no bloody murders and this is why the show is great and really needs to find a home. The world today is so full of hate so when you watch a movie or show it is nice to see something like this show.
You hit it so right. They used to shoot the series in my neighborhood. When you walked by the cameras, you just knew (when the episode was finally aired) you would love the episode.
Bring it back!
It was one of the best shows on TV and was one of the most unique characters on the small screen. Hopefully it will find a new home.
I am with you all-the-way on this one.
I love this show! Can’t believe they are canceling it again! Hope another network picks it up!
I am hopeful. This was an unfortunate case, a well-liked series that (towards the end) had its
ratings go up. (It even made the top 10.) There was (probably) much profit, but because of the ownership of the series (50% CBS instead of 100%), the profit for CBS just was not enough.
Yes we would watch
Sony is trying. Hard. Let’s keep fingers crossed.
I like both renditions of it the old and the new… would still watch it anywhere.. if it goes to cable I can see Poppy, Jane and Dylan naked… and they can curse.. lol
How can they cancel it!? Now I’ll never know what happens with Carrie, Al and the ‘husband’….:( I hope they bring the show back:)
We are all disappointed. But don’t give up. I have been in contact with Sony Pictures TV, who are trying their best to find another network to broadcast new episodes. They are professionals at this. I am hopeful.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed:)
Thank you. I know it has been submitted to several already, and will likely be submitted to more. Networks are corporations. They are a bureaucracy; sometimes movement is slow, and since it comes down to projected-profit, they consider everything. But the fact that the series already has 48 episodes “under its belt” is a good thing. I was surprised when CBS let it go because it only needed 1 more season to get syndicators interested, but I guess CBS felt another season was too long to wait because currently the profit was not enough. CBS has very high standards.
