Debris aired its first season finale on Monday, and the future of the series is still up in the air. With the finale ending with a cliffhanger, viewers are wondering if the series will return.
Both the creator of the NBC series, J.H. Wyman, and the star of the sci-fi drama, Jonathan Tucker, spoke about the future of the series with Deadline.
Wyman said the following about the choice to end the season with a cliffhanger:
“You know, it’s like, yeah, we always say that, but the first season of a show is always supposed to be an origin story, and that people are supposed to grab the handlebars and say now what the show is, okay, I get it. But then, we’re supposed to recontextualize it as you move forward, and, it’s no mistake that Sebastian Roché’s last line is, plays the character of Brill, is, “Let’s begin,” because it’s supposed to just completely change your expectations, and realize there’s so much more to come.”
Tucker was also positive about the future of Debris. He said the following:
“The smartest leaders in business invest in people over ideas, and while Debris is a great idea, it’s run by an even better person. And you know, when you are in, again, probably any business, but I can speak specifically to the creative endeavor of entertainment, you have to take a leap of faith with people, and you take a leap of faith with the machines, with your acting partners, and the crew that comes together.”
If the show is cancelled, Wyman says:
Well, if the worst case is to happen, that, they decide that they weren’t going to continue this, I would look for other avenues to continue telling this story, because I think that the story itself is really a story worth writing about, and so much more to tell.
I would say that, that even if it didn’t work out at NBC, I would try to get it somewhere somehow., I really believe in the show, and I love, love, love my fans. I love the people that believe in this work, and last thing, and I want to give them something that they enjoy.
It is not known when NBC will make a decision about the future of the sci-fi series.
What do you think? Do you want to see a second season of Debris on NBC? Would you watch the show on a different channel or service?
Please renewal the Show
Hoping for the best but NBC is notoriously bad to cancel stuff after fans have invested time and devotion to a series. They did have the sense of mind to bring back the Series ‘Timeless’ in a movie to give us some closure.
Hopefully they’ll keep this one on the air. Otherwise, I’ll be adding another # to my posts: #SaveDebris and tagging the outlets that may be receptive.
Yes, would love a season 2 and beyond. This type of show is needed in the sea of cop shows.
YES! I want a 2nd (and 3rd and 4th) season of Debris….
I love the show Debris & I hope it returns. I started watching it from the first episode & it doesn’t disappoint. It keeps you thinking & the story line is well written. Please renew this show!!!!!! Yes, keep it on NBC for sure!!!!
Love the show—good acting and a creative story. Hope it returns—I watch it every week. Stay on NBC please—can’t DVR streaming services
I think the reason that 2-3million viewers stuck with the show thru 13 weeks is because the show made you think. It made you use that muscle between your ears to ferret out answers or to even potentially come up with a conclusion that worked with the characters. The fact it held steady and did not lose the number of viewers other shows did, for me at least warrants a renewal. If it goes to Peacock that’s fine but I almost want it to go to Prime video. I think the possibility for more growth happens there than Peacock but… Read more »
Debris took a good premise & trashed it . Wyman (writer/producer) never created coherent storyline and instead played the audience with easter-eggs and surprise reveals. ugh
Not to mention the show was miscast all to hell. Neither of the leads are particularly capable of making their characters interesting. Tucker looks like a live-action version of Clutch Cargo, a static face where the lips move, but there’s no emotion. And I almost fell out of my chair when I saw him with that fake beard during that soldier flashback. At least with the XFiles, the first few seasons were all about the mystery, and less about the conspiracy. The conspiracy stuff was always there, but it was in the background, maybe an episode here or there, but… Read more »
Too bad the writers couldn’t follow in the footsteps of a show like “Fringe”. We watched it to the bitter end and could not wait until it ended. Pitiful writing and casting. Makes one wonder if the writers ever had an idea for a storyline. I not only hope it does not get renewed but hope no other service is naive or desperate enough to pick it up.
It’s my new Fringe! I miss that show and this fills the spot.
Please renew Debris….a different and interesting story.
It’s a good show but no chance for renewal. Ratings were just pathetic. It’s a shame we wasted so much time on it but that’s they way it goes.
They were bad, no doubt. But it was getting ratings comparable to The Blacklist, so they can carry it if they want. Another thing in its favor is the ratings were consistent which indicates a loyal base. Science Fiction does poorly on US TV Networks, so I am hoping the dependable viewer base is enough for renewal.
The problem isn’t with sci fi doing poorly on US TV. The real issue is these writers don’t write multi-season story arcs. They do them ad-hoc as they get renewed, and the result is a promising premise turning into garbage. And this isn’t unique to sci fi. It’s all genres. It’s easy for writers when they have source material like Game of Thrones and Outlander. But not when the stories are generated out of pure creativity. And then there’s the issue with TV Exec interference with the storytelling. When a show doesn’t do well right out the gate, execs start… Read more »
Ratings were good John my Dad said so it will get renewed we will see if it gets renewed it’s a very good show to continue on they left us with a big cliffhanger so it needs to get renewed
