It’s that time of year again. The new batch of network shows has been on the air for a couple of months. Some have been given full-season orders while others have not. FOX’s The Big Leap and Our Kind of People fall into the latter category and won’t return for mid-season. Have they been cancelled or, is there still hope for second season renewals?
A musical dramedy series, The Big Leap TV show stars Scott Foley, Teri Polo, Piper Perabo, Simone Recasner, Ser’Darius Blain, Jon Rudnitsky, Raymond Cham Jr., Mallory Jansen, Kevin Daniels, and Anna Grace Barlow. The show follows a group of diverse, down-on-their-luck people who attempt to change their lives by participating in a potentially life-ruining reality dance show.
A drama series, the Our Kind of People TV show stars Yaya DaCosta, Morris Chestnut, Joe Morton, Nadine Ellis, Lance Gross, Rhyon Nicole Brown, Kyle Bary, and Alana Bright with Debbi Morgan, L. Scott Caldwell, Raven Goodwin, and Nicole Chanel Williams in recurring roles. The series takes place in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, a historical stronghold where the rich and powerful Black elite have come to play for over 50 years. In the story, a strong-willed and single mother named Angela Vaughn (DaCosta) sets out to make an impact but she soon discovers a dark secret about her mother’s past that turns her world and the community upside-down.
Airing on Mondays, The Big Leap averages a 0.24 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.28 million viewers in the live+same day ratings (including DVR playback through 3:00 AM). The series sees significant gains in live+7 day viewing, averaging a 0.34 demo with 2.12 million.
On Tuesdays, Our Kind of People averages a 0.32 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 1.47 million viewers. This series also sees significant gains in live+7 day viewing, averaging a 0.52 demo with 2.25 million.
Deadline reports that FOX has opted not to order any additional episodes of these low-rated freshman series. Leap will wrap its season with 11 episodes while People will have an even dozen installments.
The decision not to order additional episodes is hardly surprising. Both shows have struggled in the ratings and are the network’s two lowest scripted performers, even when adding in the live+7 day delayed viewing.
Word is that the network is talking to the shows’ producers about ideas for second seasons. Talk about shows that don’t get episode back orders still being in contention for next season is par for the course and has never, to my memory, resulted in a renewal. While neither series has been officially cancelled, it is highly unlikely that FOX will want to resurrect two disappointing performers and try to generate interest for second seasons. Maybe this time will be different?
What do you think? Do you watch either The Big Leap or Our Kind of People on FOX? Do you think there’s a chance that either of these shows will be renewed for 2022-23 or, have they essentially been cancelled?
Love the Big Leap
Yaya should go back to Chicago Med.
I love our kinda people please give the show a chance. I think the shows awesome.
Of course they cancel shows I’ve enjoyed watching.. yet keep and add stupid game and dating ones. With major issues off no closure
I SO agree!!!!!!
Our kind of people needs to be cancelled. The writing , directing editing and the acting is horrible on this show. This show does not have any heart , joy soul etc. it is a soulless show. The drama is basic. You know what’s going to happen in 2 or 3 episodes before it airs. I have wasted my time watching this show. The show is all over the place. I believe the showrunners and writers lost the main plot point early in the show. I want to support Yaya but I can’t support this show. Big leap is actually… Read more »
At least it’s not all mellow dramatic and. Takes 8 seasons to get to the point like a Tyler perry show
Our kind of People should be given another chance. Maybe switching the night it is shown
NOT SURPRISE AT ALL….both of these shows seemed ridiculous ,just from the description, and previews, and after watching 3-4 episodes each, it was clear, these shows would not survive, bad writing/concept/acting,plots, i just hope they dont replace these with more garbge “reality.competition, singing, dancing ” shows ENOUGH ALREADY.
Bring back our kind of people love this show!! Look forward to seeing them every week
So disappointing that Our Kind of People won’t be renewed! Our family never missed an episode. We loved the storylines, editing, cinematography. The show is a treat on so many levels. Hopefully, FOX will produce another series featuring Yaya DaCosta and Joe Morton! We’d love to see more of these two stunners!!
Our kind of people its always the good shows that ends this is just sickness…
I LOVE The Big Leap!!! Scott Foley delivers some of the most hilarious one liners and talent in this show artistically is incredible. FOX is getting so bad at cancelling great shows.
God forbid anything with a story and well cast characters should survive on Fox. Hello Lucifer and Prodigal Son, I’m looking at you. Please break the cycle and give these two series another chance.
Lucifer got 3 seasons on Fox and nearly 60 episodes. They run a business, not a charity.
WOW, just WOW!!!! Our Kind Of People is a GREAT show. I guess FOX executives feel it’s NOT popular to show African Americans in affluent situations. You know, let’s keep them in reality TV showing stupidity and false drama situations. I’m so disappointed with FOX. Guess there wasn’t enough “Yo Momma” jokes, and “steppin’ fetchit” going on, on Our Kind Of People. No drug dealing, or pimps or prostitution. Yiu know UNFORTUNATELY, that’s the way the way the African American community is seen. But guess what FOX, wether you want it to be or not…..African Americans definitely live as portrayed… Read more »
Fox executives, the people you’re accusing of racism, are the ones that green lighted and put the show on the air. The American people have rejected it.
The ratings are. The viewers decided they didnt like it.
The show is horrible. These is no continuity of storylines. Example what happen to Raymond ‘s friend who is his business partner. He kissed leah at the ball. Where is the guy ? What happened to that storyline?
Those were some of my exact thoughts! I had the same emotional outburst when All Rise (CBS) and For Life (ABC) were canceled. It’s almost like the networks offer samples and then blame people for not getting their hopes up for new shows representing positive AA lifestyles or shows about overcoming their pasts.
Our Kind Of People is a great show and should be given a chance before canceling.
‘The Big Leap’ is not bad at all. You will never be able to prove that I am a musical fan. Or anything that contains dancing or singing for that matter.
But the big leap had some nice humor in it that was good and not overdone, not too much drama, a bit of romance and the people in the show are clearly very skilled in dancing.
So Fox still hasn’t learned to commit to decent content and doubling down on their usual thrash. Why do I even bother with that studio…
