ABC cancelled four series last week, and now Craig Erwich, President of ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, is revealing the reasoning behind dropping Rebel, For Life, American Housewife, and Mixed-ish.
Erwich said the following about the cancellation of the four shows, per Deadline:
“They are all unique shows who on their own specific timeline where they are creatively and with the audience. I can say that just because we are not ordering new seasons does not take anything away from the impact that these shows had creatively or how many fans they have on ABC. These are difficult business decisions but we are really proud of the runs that all of these shows had.”
As for Rebel, Erwich did speak about that series directly. The series was canceled after airing just four episodes. Katey Sagal, Erin Brockovich and Krista Vernoff all spoke out after the Thursday night series was cancelled. Erwich said the following about the still airing ABC series:
“Krista Vernoff is not just an amazing talent, she is a valued and beloved part of the Disney family. We gave Rebel a really considerable launch and a launch effort. It was a huge priority for us for midseason. One of the advantages of a stable schedule is, you can focus and platform new shows, which Rebel was a beneficiary of Unfortunately, it did not garner the audience that we needed it to do, so we had to make that decision.”
For Life is being shopped to other outlets, and the same could happen for Rebel.

Keep Rebel and Mixed-ish, you selfish money driven people. You give us things we love and then take them away…it’s no wonder we self medicate. Also, pick up Stumptown, Rizzoli and Isles, Body of Proof, Mom, etc. My list is long of quality tv that all networks dispose of. Then you blame viewers like me who just want to turn you off

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL THE SERIES, “REBEL”!! It’s one of the FEW series my husband and I watch!! We DVR IT to make sure we see it!! GIVE THE SERIES A CHANCE!!! I love REBEL! It’s the first show I watch of my recorded shows. I can’t believe it’s being cancelled. Just like a network to cancel something you really like. It’s good to see someone fighting for the everyday Joe against the greedy corporations.
I have watched every episode of Rebel…..love this show….very disappointed in the cancellation……I think the signatures on our petition warrant a second look by ABC and their decision to cancel. If ABC won’t give Rebel another chance, hopefully someone else will!
So disappointed that Rebel got canceled. Hope another network picks it up. Easily really enjoying the show. It has an excellent storyline and cast. Years ago, got so entangled with Castle and was heartbroken when ABC fired Stana Katic and Tamala Jones. Well, Congrats ABC. You have just done it again. Hope you are happy because you just lost me as a viewer again
Rebel had great cast, great story, great everything. They don’t give shows a chance to find an audience. If that were the case in the past there would be no Seinfeld. But they leave trash like these reality shows and Bachelor/Bachelorette on.
We are so disappointed to see Rebel canceled! It has been fun watching a strong minded woman with this terrific cast and it should have NOT been canceled!! Hope another network picks it up.

American Housewife should stay, even with the change in cast and the two older kids growing up it still would of worked, they could easily still be a huge part of the show, Plenty of other shows have made it work and American Housewife would of done the same. This was just such a great show and related to so many different age groups, I really wish that another network would pick it up because I would hate to see this show gone forever.
Absolutely nuts! Rebel and Housewife. What are you thinking? You didn’t give Rebel a chance and yet keep reality crap.

ANOTHER short-sighted ABC decision!
No ABC made the right decision – four episodes is enough to gage viewership across all platforms. By the time episode 4 had aired, they had enough data for the previous 3 episodes to make a decision.
Mixed-ish sister, Grandfather and the youngest child were the best characters. Sometimes shows need to play up to their strengths.
Rebel was not on long enough to make a call. It is a great show. Perhaps look at some of the characters instead of the whole show. The team of Rebel and her detective is the real show. The others can be down played.
I will miss Rebel for sure. I set my DVR to catch it. What a great show! Please rethink that mistake and give it another chance!
