Why did CBS just cancel most of their new TV shows? Recently, network boss Kelly Kahl spoke with Deadline about the decision to cancel Broke, Carol’s Second Act, Tommy, and God Friended Me.
With the exception of God Friended Me, which wrapped its second season this spring, all the shows cancelled debuted during the 2019-20 season. CBS also cancelled Man with a Plan, which is currently airing its fourth season.
Speaking to Deadline, Kahl revealed it was a “tough” decision to cancel Broke, God Friended Me, Carol’s Second Act, and Tommy:
At the end of the day they weren’t doing the numbers we were hoping for, and despite liking them creatively, knowing timely decisions were upon us, we had to make tough calls to move on from those shows. You want to keep them all for another season; that’s what makes these calls tough. You invest a lot of time and effort and people put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into these shows, and when you have to say goodbye. It’s a tough call.”

Cancelling “God Friended Me” meants cancelling the one family, faith-oriented show my family and I looked forward to each week. When I can get my husband to watch a show like this, that’s saying a lot. Two seasons is not enough to determine the validity of the show. Other shows you’ve had were given more of an opportunity and most went on to do well, for years. You now have another violence-based drama in it’s place. That is the last thing we need. Bring it back, give it another two seasons before making the decision to cancel.
I watched and loved Tommy—Broke—God Friended Me—3 good shows—channel 2 used to be number 1—most watched—-a leader—now all we have to contend with is junk—I am leaving channel 2—no need to watch anymore—thanks for nothing.
I am extremely disappointed in your decision to cancel “God Friended Me”. The show was truly geared toward wholesome viewers and could be watched by all ages. This show helped me in so many ways, including transitioning from weekend to work week. I’ve been loyal to CBS, but I will be moving on to other networks / stations. I see where CBS’ loyalty is…… farewell, old friend.
God Friended me was my all time favorite feel good show EVER!. I looked forward to it every week. I feel a loss that it has been cancelled….as much today, as the moment I first found out it was cancelled.
We needed this show about kindness, non judgmental compassion and helping people…and we need this message now more than ever. I hope with all my heart it will continue on another network. And if the series comes out on DVD, I will be first in line to buy it….and watch over and over.
“God Friended Me” was the only show I watched consistently! It was uplifting with a a mystery of who was behind the account. Every episode someone was helped. The stories would connected to different episodes-we are all connected in some way. I am still at a loss a TV series so unique and inspirational was cancelled at a time where people need to see the good around them and help each other.
I was shocked and very disappointed that God Friended Me was cancelled. It was one of my favorite shows. I certainly hope another network picks it up.
Very disappointed that God Friended Me was cancelled! It not only was a great show, it was especially good stories in the midst of the pandemic! CBS got it wrong.
God friended me…was my favorite show.
Yea I loves Tommy nees to bring it back. It is showing women working high profile jobs and how she has to fight the men.. great show.
God Friended Me was one of my favourite shows. It was such a breath of fresh air. Very disappointed that it was cancelled. I also thought Tommy was very good. What’s “a tough call” is when a network loses its integrity. This is what CBS has done.
God Friended me was one of the best shows on Tv. I looked forward to watching every episode. I was totally bummed when I found out it was cancelled.
Please bring Tommy back! One of the best new shows. I would definitely watch another season.
God friended was a great show. Very disappointed in CBS. We need more show like this.. We are losing freedoms are nation and turning from God.. Very sad..
