The Best Written TV Series Is…?

Top TV showsThe members of the Writers Guild of America were asked to vote online for the best written TV series in history. The organization tallied a list of 101 shows and David Chase’s HBO drama, The Sopranos, came out on top.

It’s worth noting that the list contains a few titles that most consider to be mini-series, not TV shows — like Roots and I, Claudius.

For better or worse, here’s the WGA’s complete list. Please share your thoughts below!

Deadwood and Oz: DirecTV to Air Cancelled Series

April 23, 2009
Cementing their reputation for scooping up beloved cancelled series, DirecTV has announced that they're going to be airing two more; Deadwood and Oz. Deadwood is centered around an outlaw camp in the Old West. The HBO series was nominated for 22 Emmy Awards and won seven in its all too-brief 36 episode, three season run. The drama showcases the talents of thespians like Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, Molly Parker, Brad Dourif, W. Earl Brown, John Hawkes, Paula Malcomson, Dayton Callie, Leon Rippy, William Sanderson, Robin Weigert, Sean Bridgers, and Bree Seanna Wall. HBO committed to produce a pair of movies to wrap up the series but they never materialized. Oz gives viewers a look into the harsh and often horrific world of the Oswald State Correctional Facility. The series ran for six seasons and 56 episodes on HBO. The large cast includes Kirk Acevedo, Ernie Hudson, Terry Kinney, Rita Moreno, Harold Perrineau, J.K. Simmons, Lee Tergesen, Eamonn Walker, Dean Winters, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Edie Falco, George Morfogen, Lauren Velez, B.D. Wong, Zeljko Ivanek, Zakes Mokae, Christopher Meloni, Kathryn Erbe, Luis Guzman, David Lansbury, Eddie Malavarca, Mark Margolis, J.D. Williams, Bill Fagerbakke, Scott William Winters, Granville Adams, Tom Mardirosian, Craig Grant, and Evan Seinfeld. DirecTV kept Passions alive when NBC cancelled it but that didn't last a full year. More recently, DirecTV has been helping to keep Friday Night Lights alive by partnering with NBC to produce the show. The satellite television provider recently announced plans to begin airing short-lived network series like Smith, The Nine, and Eyes on the DirecTV's exclusive Channel 101.

Where Are They Now? Some Greenroom Chatter for December 26, 2008

While you're out shopping in stores today, you could see some of the talent from cancelled TV shows. Others may be hard at work on shows like 90210, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Samantha Who?, and Damages. Those keeping busy include William H. Macy (Sports Night), Rob Thomas, Ken Marino and Ryan Hansen (Veronica Mars), Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks), Adam Scott (Tell Me You Love Me), Jane Lynch (Help Me Help You), Lizzy Caplan (The Class), Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies), David E. Kelley (Boston Legal), Matt Lanter (Commander in Chief), Tracy Pollan (Family Ties), Marissa Jaret Winokur (Stacked), Barbara Eden (I Dream of Jeannie), Dean McDermott (Tori & Dean: Inn Love), Rena Sofer (Just Shoot Me!), Connor Trinneer (Star Trek: Enterprise), Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood), Billy Zane (Twin Peaks), Kevin Sorbo (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys), and Wendy Diamond (Greatest American Dog). Remember on Bewitched when Dick York was replaced by Dick Sargent? Well, the same thing's about to happen to another Sam, this time on ABC's Samantha Who? sitcom. Apparently Timothy Olyphant (Deadwood) is so busy working on FX's Damages that he's not available to reprise his role as Christina Applegate's ex-boyfriend, Funk. As a result, they're recasting the role with Billy Zane (Twin Peaks). Geez, don't you think this is messing with poor Samantha's noggin a bit much?
